Sonic Boom (The Game)

I still think 06 and Shadow the hedgehog are far more embarrassing games.

I don't know what y'all talking about, this game is glorious. It could be our Planet 9 from Outer Space, the cult classic for just how hilariously terrible it is.

I guess one way to put it is that Sonic Boom, by having already distanced itself from the main canon as soon it was revealed, doesn't crap on Sonic's legacy on any level, while Sonic 06 on the other hand was intended to be an anniversary celebration (by rebooting the franchise, effing amazing logic).

Now that I think about it Sonic Boom was only originally announced as a TV series, so that effectively makes the Sonic Boom games the Sonic equivalent of Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game, especially since the games are structured a lot like a typical movie game.

people are considering this as part of the main console lineup because it did get the same level of buildup as one.

But away from the main canon or not, this is still going to give people negative feelings for the future of series because of how SEGA let this happen.

This game's been criticized for having bad jokes. Could someone give me an example of one?

From what I've seen the only really cringe-worthy dialogue stems from Knuckles being a total idiot.

"There are presents?!"

oh and insert character here going on forever about rings/bounce pads

Yeah there's some cringeworthy dialouge and/or rather dumb characterization in the Cutscenes. (They made Knuckles pretty much the big idiot, and Shadow is pretty unnecessary and he literally fights Sonic just because he's a dick xD He literally says that Sonic is weak and pathetic for having friends before Shadow just comes up and fights Sonic. With no explanation as to what Shadow is even like in Sonic Boom giving this is a different universe from the main one.)

Though regarding the annoying dialouge when collecting Rings or bouncing on pads. You can actually turn off the constant chatter, they give you the option to turn that off. It does also remove some of the more helpful dialouge, but when the game's already too easy enough. I think it's good if you really do want to figure things out on your own rather then let Sonic and his friends be Captain Obvious all the time.

I actually liked Chronicles.

I thought it was ok. Not a giant fan but I never really disliked it. Same for Shadow the Hedgehog, for that matter.

Think I'll be skipping this one, though.

i've heard it was just plain bad, not really "so bad it's funny" type.

Have the 3DS version's review, the summary was as I expected (not amazing, but still good) and I'm considering getting this in the somewhat distant future.

Yeah, it's not "funny" bad unfortunately, unlike Sonic 06.

I just had a thought, should Big Red Button bother with adding some sort of amiibo functionality with the Sonic amiibo?

How about the Smash 4 Sonic amiibo makes all the characters get a wardrobe change to be closer to their original counterparts?

Though that would require an update and if this game is ever going to get an update it should make the game a lot more stable and/or presentable before adding new features.

I can't believe critics think this game is worse than 06. After all, 06 is the utter black sheep of Sonic.

Sonic 06 could've been a good game though if it was in development for like a year longer.

This game just was bad from the start out they didn't even want to make it enjoyable or good.

That is what you call a cash grab.

The design choices for Sonic 06 are still very weird. They advertise that there would be 3 Main characters. Sonic, Shadow, or Silver. They never warn you that you also will also be playing as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Omega, Rouge, Blaze the Cat for at least a little bit of the game. Most of those having their very own type of Gameplay style (And get this, for the exception of Omega, none of these characters are anywhere close to being as fast as Sonic, and considering Sonic is still slower then he usually is to begin with, that makes characters like Silver a chore to play with especially when you're walking through the hubworlds that are too big for slow characters). As well as add other types of gameplay by adding Multiplayer, all of Shadow's vehicles, and Missions (That include such gems like walking a dog or hide n' seek with children).

Yes, you can argue Sonic 06 tried harder. But in this case, they tried too hard to the point where the game was pretty much nearly doomed from the start. Maybe if Sega had actually restricted the game to just how they advertised with Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. And not spending precious development time on all those different gameplay elements, the Multiplayer, and the Hard Mode (And the Very Hard mode considering the DLC). Then Sonic 06 could have at least come out a decent game.

Nearly everything in Sonic 06 for the exception of the Music falls really short. In Rise of Lyric at least you know from the start you'll be playing as more then just Sonic. And they all play decently. There's a few more gameplay elements giving the submarine and Boat sections but even those are few and far between compared to the mess Sonic 06 had. The Sonic Boom games might have been more cash grabby (Though even Sonic 06 is kind of one because otherwise Sega wouldn't have released the game when it did because it really wanted to meet the deadline for Sonic's 15th Anniversary) but that only puts them closer to some of those mediocre games that are supposed to tie-in with recently made Kids films or TV Shows.

It also has the excuse that it's not a part of the Main series, it doesn't need to be compared to the main line of Sonic games because that's not what it aims for. Meanwhile we have to go on knowing that Sonic 06 IS considered part of the Main series, the game retconning itself story-wise doesn't do anything to repair the damage Sonic 06 did on the franchise. The failure of the Sonic Boom games might shut down Big Red Button, or at least restrict the Sonic Boom series to strictly the show (Given the show has been met with at least some degree of positivity). But it won't be as huge of a dent to the Main series, especially given this was made by a brand new and different company (A company that'll probably be doomed to be one-and-done due to the game's failure but different company nonetheless)

Still, the Sonic fanbase were beginning to get back into the series. People are starting to warm up to Unleashed and Black Knight, and Colors and Generations were loved, and when the panned Lost World came out, people just assumed it was a dud. And then the Sonic Boom games come out and wreck the series.

And then there are people like me who don't really like any of the Sonic games except for SA2 because of Nostalgia.

I like calling you guys Robotnikers, because you more often than not hate the modern games so much that you feel that calling Robotnik "Eggman" is a compliment to the modern series, which you therefore won't do.

Personally I actually enjoyed Lost World myself. Sure I wouldn't say it's a great Sonic game. By all means the most recent "Great" Sonic game definitely goes to the PC/Console versions of Sonic Generations. But I don't know, I think I was already kind of bored of the "Boost-to-win" engine that we've had since the day stages of Unleashed and with some fine tuning. I feel the Parkour system would work well if used again.

Overall that just makes me think it's a stretch that we're under another slump for Sonic games (Or some have even said a new Dark Age of Sonic). For those who aren't aware of what the Dark Age of Sonic is considered. It's usually said to have begun with Sonic 06 (Though some put it as far back as the Shadow the Hedgehog game) and ended depending who you ask, after Unleashed or when Sonic Colors came out.

1. I also like Lost World (actually, I own the 3DS version), but they couldn't have made the level design worse if they tried.
2. The "dark age" is now considered to be from Shadow the Hedgehog to Secret Rings (like I said, people are starting to accept Black Knight and Unleashed)
