So is this still a thing, or is it done with? I never got a chance to download it.

If you participated in it, the on-map Pokéballs and Pokémon will remain, though if you haven't, you can't see them anymore.

The download pretty much happened automatically, given you have the latest version of Google Maps on your phone.
