Talk about the first 3 seasons before they ruined the show here!

I loved them, but they weren't perfect. Some episodes such as The Paper or Gary Takes a Bath I didn't particularly like. I very much prefer them over something like Squid's Visit or Boating Buddies however.

I'm with BL. As great as some of the episodes were, not everything is the perfect vision a lot of people seem to have of it(looking at you, Paper). Stuff like Band Geeks was awesome though.

I didn't enjoy The Great Snail Race, The Paper, or Gary Takes a Bath.

All the others I remember were good.

There was a pre-movie episode called Party Pooper Pants: I don't recall seeing it but reading the synopsis it sounds awful.

I'm with Stupid is pretty bad too. It's a pre-movie Patrick is a Prick episode

I forgot the name of the episode, but there's one where Patrick is visited by his parents and Spongebob pretends to be an idiot in order to make Patrick look good.

I hate that episode with a passion. Patrick is so insufferable.

EDIT:
Wait, is it that one? ^

Yep that episode is called I'm With Stupid

My favorite episodes include Arghh (I think that was the name of it, it's the one where Patrick says "Oh East? I thought you said Weast"), Rock Bottom (my first episode I ever watched), and of course Band Geeks. But I don't mind the new Spongebob episodes either. Still waiting for an actual sequel to Rock Bottom however. (Unless there was one and I missed it)

Some of them are ok, but there's just WAYYY too much bad episodes in the newer seasons.

That's why I said this:

Anyway.

What I liked about the old episodes is that the characters felt more believable, at least as far that is possible for Spongebob characters. Maybe "believable" is not the best word. "Whole" might describe it better.

For example, it was pretty thoroughly established that Squidward hates Spongebob, among other things because Spongebob's perpetual happiness and loud exclamation of said happiness annoys him to no end. However, he was not bound exclusively to that two-dimensional outline of his characterisation. On rare occasions when Spongebob was subjected to extreme misfortune without being at fault, Squidward was able to desist from his usual hate and treat Spongebob decently. Similar things happened with other characters.

This observation sounds completely stupid because it's a character analysis of Spongebob's cast of all things. But to me it is that contrast, that multi-facetted aspect of the characters that makes the funny moments of the show even funnier. Because the characters feel... right.

When I look at the newer episodes, I don't really get that feeling anymore. From what I've seen there has been a lot of flanderization going on, and the characters feel more like walking character bios instead of organic people that also happen to be funny. Also there seems to be a lot of gross-out moments now, like kjfajlkfafjhf that goddamn toenail scene why who thought this was a good ideaarghbl

You left out breaking and entering Squidward's house, destroying his property (Employee of the Month), and shoving his opinions down Squidward's throat (Just One Bite) although Squidward admittedly deserved that one for dissing a food he's never eaten before.

Oh yeah. Forgot that one.

That was horrible.

What exactly was so bad about that one, aside from the incompetent police?

The characterization was definitely a lot better, but more than that changed.

Example: Before the movie, Squidward was likable because he was well written. Now, he's likable for being one of the few characters who ISN'T outright malicious.

Also, Mr. Krabs used to have a soul. Now all he cares about is money.

Well he DID sell his soul to the Flying Dutchman in Money Talks...

And Spongebob actually knew Sandy's last name.

Is that the one where Spongebob is locked out of his house and arrested whilst trying to get back in?
