Debate remaining veterans

Now, I'll try to formally format the unconfirmed vets into whether I think they'll be back or not.

Ness/Jigglypuff - Members of the original 12, they're definitely going to make it.

Mr. Game and Watch/R.O.B - These guys represent Nintendo from the older days, I think they're in just for the sake of keeping classics.

Ganondorf/Meta Knight/Wario - They're relevant characters from popular Nintendo franchises. No reason not to keep 'em.

Falco - ehhhhh Star Fox hasn't been so popular lately but I still think Falco's good enough to make it in.

Wolf/Mewtwo/Ice Climbers - I feel these guys are toss-ups at this point.

Lucas - I don't think Earthbound/Mother is relevant enough to have two reps, basically the same situation as F-Zero

Dr. Mario/Young Link - Dead alternate versions can stay dead without trouble (besides Toon Link is already pushing it)

Pichu/Roy - Their series have too many reps

Ivysaur/Squirtle - There is no way more than one of the Trainer's Pokémon is coming back

Snake - We already have enough third-party characters

Ice Climbers are in my top three most used and getting rid of Mother completely is a terrible idea so yeah I'd care.

Would anybody care if they cut out Mario? Would anybody care if they cut Mr. Game & Watch? Would anybody care if they cut Pokemon Trainer...oh wait they did. You know, if you ask that question, you're basically baiting yourself for an attack by people who actually use and care about aforementioned characters, especially when 1. Ness is the star of a series with a highly niche fanbase (still a strong one) and had perfect attendance since the original, and 2. the Ice Climbers are high tier, two-player tag-team, and chain grabbing masters. Competitive players like Ice Climbers because of their awesome chaingrab. And then, there's casual people like me who happen to like Ice Climbers and Ness, probably my favorite characters in the Smash franchise. Just because they're not as vocal as you think they are doesn't mean no one cares about those characters.

Relevancy my ass. Super Smash Bros. is supposed to be a series representing the entire Nintendo universe, not JUST the ones that are still used today. You're totally missing the point if the only characters they use are the franchises that are still alive and recent. In fact, including dead franchises may give hope that possibly a reboot could happen in the future, see Kid Icarus: Uprising, and may bring a surge in popularity. Fire Emblem is a prime example of such.
 
Either way, people make this dumb argument about "relevancy" all the time.
 
Mario isn't really relevant anymore.

It's been, like, 1½ months since the last Mario game.
 
And it's MARIO KART not a Mario platformer, so it no count
