In my defense, the gamepad kept deciding that it wanted to die.
Also, using Luigi probably wasn't the best idea.

I suggest using pro controller or gamecube controller since tournament doesn't allow gamepad and most doesn't allow 3ds

Luigi is actually pretty good in smash 4 though.

Nintendo themselves advertised it in the back of my official Smash 4 guide.

That is a wii remote controller, real gamecube controller is black color with smash icon on it
