Super Mario land 1 and 2 feel like such anomalies.

I wouldn't mind a new 2D Mario platformer taking inspiration from these games. It would be better than a fifth/sixth New Super Mario Bros. game.

Course it would still be called NSMB because its just a name. Even if we got a completely new 2D Mario game it would still be called NSMB even if it looked nothing like the previous ones.

I think that if it is based off of Super Mario Land, it would be called New Super Mario Land.
