The Mario & Luigi thread.

I thought the battle was great. At least they tell you how to defeat them.

If I was Bowser, I'd would've roasted them and kicked them out. Would've saved players a frustrating boss battle in the next game.

But that would be the evil thing to do, and we can't have Bowser doing evil things.

But Bowser is evil, just not pure evil.

On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being pathetically not evil with 10 being pure evil with no redeeming qualities, Bowser usually registers as 7 or 8.

I'd give him a 9 personally. I know it's largely a gameplay concept but if we were dealing with the platformer Bowser he'd have fried em. Heck he'd never buy any items or accept rewards, he'd just steal it. But again, gameplay stuff.

I always thought it was alternate universes like why Bowser can't remember Luigi's name in this series until the end of Dream Team yet he can remember just fine in other games.

thats more or less how most Mario games are made, but like everybody else I got my headcanons.

Dry Bowser should be a boss in the next game.

I was fully expecting Antasma to betray Bowser but I'm glad they went the opposite direction.

I hope they don't go backwards with the next one.

As for his sprite it looks like he has fat cheeks.

As would I.

He doesn't have to be the main villain but there are ways of having him not be the main villain without needing to dumb him down.

Eh. since these games are the ones I'm most familiar with I must say I'm used to Bowser being comic relief. My headcanons mainly revolve around these games and I picture the main Mario cast similar to the SpongeBob cast in that the recurring villain is expected to fail and just has a passion for trying.

That's why I prefer new villains in the RPGs, they unite the main cast despite their differences.

Bowser was handled really well in Dream Team, I just personally like it more when he is forced to either team up with Mario or become his own protagonist to defeat a new villain. It gives a special "we're all in this together" feel that's one of the main reasons the RPGs are my favorite part of the series. Really wish the main series would at least try to match that kind of feeling.

You can also be comic relief without being dumbed down.

Well I'm of the opinion that the main antagonist of the series shouldn't be constantly pushed around by whatever shmuck walks up on stage.

Especially since this is the guy who is capable of conquering the entire mushroom kingdom in about 5 minutes.

It isn't. We've seen how it plays out several times.

In Paper Mario 64 and in Super Mario Galaxy maybe. But everything else to me is the product of an excuse plot that's only there to throw the player into the first level.

Which doesn't change the fact that it still happens.

There is no arguing with this, in order to make other villains look credible they always dumbed Bowser down.

Still, as long as they remember his development from now on things should be fine.

On another note, I think they need to drop the dual world mechanics for the next game. Bowser's body and the dream worlds were fun but they often felt like padding from a storyline perspective.

the park is just a short walk south, oh wait the bridge collapsed, guess you gotta go through an hour long dungeon to get out.

oh you gotta climb the mountain? better sign up for the tour, tour can't leave? gotta find the tour guide, can't wake him up? go into his dreams where you gotta beat up all his goons and himself to wake him up

there are other irritating examples as well

especially since the sea horses weren't funny and their dialogue ran on too long

which fits into my earlier complaint about too many pointless characters that talk too much

in terms of being a villain protagonist yes.

They still had to dumb him down though.
