20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 20: A game that truly scared you

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

Haven't posted in a while.

7. Super Mario Galaxies 1 and 2 music, In the Finale from BIS besides others in the game, Superstar Saga (though, I really don't like the Teehee Valley music in the remake), and Super Mario 64 (DS).

8. Zelda: Triforce Heroes may be one.

9. I said it before and I'll say it again: :bowser:

10. Probably DKC trilogy (all GBA games)

11. See music list, as those games are good as well.

12. Besides that Smash game I played, I never been interested in T games, but even more so afterwards. And I haven't been interested in Smash since.

13. Tippi because of her tattle and (more importantly) her story.

14. either Mario Kart Wii, Superstar Saga, Super Mario Galaxy, or Super Mario 64 (DS-?).

15. above, but without the either and ?.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

I'd say Donkey Kong 64

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

All Mario 3D platformers, although each one is different in terms of controls and story, everyone should at least play one of them in their lifetime.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

Even though someone might dislike fighting games, if they own a Nintendo console, then I say you gotta play a Smash game.

Honestly, this poll assumes that the "everyone" bit is open-minded on what games they play and still know how good it is despite not being up to their taste. Some may not like platformers, some may not like shooters, and yeah some may not like fighting games etc. But when you pick a game, it's under the assumption that this person likes the genre and is a must-play. Like, if you're a platformer fan, you should play a Mario game. If you're an FPS fan, you should play Doom. That sort of thing.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

Super Metroid.

It's a great game.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

My first thought is a Mario Kart game, and the game would be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Although Mario Kart existed since the SNES, the original is probably difficult to recommend for everybody since it doesn't play with most of the other games. The Mario Kart games goes through a lot of refinement that make each passing game better and better, and while some of the games have weaknesses like Mario Kart Wii's item onslaught, its strengths cannot be understated. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a culmination of what Mario Kart has achieved:
  • It is a game that anybody could play: due to its arcade racer nature, the controls are easy to learn. It's also understood that to win, the player needs to reach the finish. Moreover, items help out players behind the pack to catch up so less-skilled players have a way to level the playing field. What is unique about 8 Deluxe is the fact that it has accessibility options, namely Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate, meaning that those who couldn't grasp the game's controls well could active them to make the game easier to control.
  • The game has a lot of customisation. Not only does this game have the most playable characters in a Mario Kart game, it also presents kart customisation, plus game customisation. The amount of customisation the player caters to anybody, so for example if one wants to have the best-looking kart or they want to have stats that are more specialised, they can do that. If they want to have a challenge with CPUs or they just want to be ahead of the CPUs, they can do that.
  • Battle Mode has a lot of variety, as they included 5 different modes, and with 8 maps, that's 40 combinations that could be done. Although to some the previous games' Battle Mode are better, I felt that this game's variety puts it at the edge.

~ Just about any mainline Pokemon title

NanoRim has just reminded me that Pokemon is a very viable option. The best game to start with is the latest one, because to quote Kat Bailey of USGamer:

With Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon now available, it's fair for a newcomer to wonder if the latest game is where they should start. After all, you wouldn't necessarily want to start with Dark Souls 3, or even the latest Assassin's Creed.

But here's the key to understanding Pokemon: You should always start with the latest game in the series. It's the easiest way to maximize your enjoyment while connecting with the community at large.

Thank you for reading.

All of the above, also adding Super Mario World, Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, TLOZBOTW, TLOZLBW, and DKC2.

Spore: Galactic Adventures

oVXJAwg.png

An expansion pack to the original Spore that can't be played by itself so any of my posts saying this includes the original Spore. Yeah I do know how the original Spore went down and it wasn't up to expectations due to EA being lying bastards and now that it's in the dust due to EA no longer caring about the franchise but I feel like its creature and building/vehicle creation tool and its ease of use really is an inspiring thing to behold. Even without mods propping it up and giving you near infinite options, there's still a near infinite amount of stuff you can do for that game. You can conceptualize whatever 2D art you made of any fantastical creature, building, or vehicle into 3D very quickly here compared to learning how to use a complicated and very expensive 3D modeling program and hell, it's the game that kicked me into the process of becoming a 3D modeler to begin with. If you even want an interior building, you can simply build one off the adventure creator in Spore: Galactic Adventures. I was in love of the game so much, that my avatar's current design is heavily based off the various archetype captain parts from Spore: Galactic Adventures, and this is very apparent on my character's helmet, which is actually designed from a mish-mash of different Spore captain parts but refined further from a 3D model program to minimize some clip errors and inconsistencies.

FTUDQWo.png

Also, GA's adventure creator is a powerful tool and it's heavily underrated. You can make levels like in my example pictures and mods even let you halve the complexity limit to make even bigger worlds like in the second picture (the adventure my twin sister and I are the proudest of, though it doesn't tell a story or adventure, we created a very living and breathing large explorable world in that one and I wish I can show you what we did; other Spore players can understand how much work was put into this adventure). I've (and my twin sister) spent a lot of time crafting those worlds, making buildings to make bigger interior buildings, even though I'm pretty much unable to share it with anyone thanks to mods and...well we just made it for ourselves to enjoy, really as it contains a lot of in-jokes and references only we know about. The sharing system is also great too, proving that you don't need a robust, dedicated online service to share what you want, as your creations are actually embedded .pngs with creation data, allowing you as a very user friendly method to easily back your stuff up by simply saving your image pngs to a safe location and then inserting them back in the game if you want to use them again.

I don't really talk about the stages of the base vanilla game like the tribal or civilization stages because that's not how I think Spore should be played. Spore should have been Galactic Adventures from the very beginning, focusing only on world creation because that's where the game shines in and I don't think it's worth playing it without Galactic Adventures.

It's a huge shame that we probably won't see another character creation game quite like Spore in the future due to EA killing off Maxis and the lack of Will Wright in the company. I am hoping someone does make a spiritual successor to the game and expands on its powerful character creation tool even further, hence if, say, I wanted to make a game, I'd make exactly that: a spiritual successor to Spore that purely focuses on the creation part of it and ditches the shallow gameplay stuff from the stages of the game. Even though I think some of the Space stage dialogue is pretty funny and it's all right to play on that stage even though it gets repetitive.

Well I guess it was inspiring enough for me to dedicate a very long post to it because I love Spore, and it was really sad to see Will Wright's project go the way it is because of corporate dickweeds like EA messing everything up.

Probably Mario Galaxy, but since this is my favorite game and I've already gushed about it multiple times, then...

If you really are looking forward to trying a strategy RPG game... but can't seem to find Mario + Rabbids or anything of the genre...

Just download Fire Emblem 7X: Immortal Sword. It's a fangame available for download on PC, and while it's far from finished (Only 12 chapters, 3 extra chapters, and 3 post-game chapters), what's there is promising, challenging, but it really does a great job at making you think about what the best move is. I strongly recommend, especially if you're wantong to try an official game in the series. And it gets major updates every year!

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

The Kirby series in general...but particularly those with troubled developments like Kirby 64, Kirby Air Ride, and especially Kirby's Return to Dream Land. HAL Laboratory is a relatively small development team, and I just think it's amazing how, even through the Return to Dream Land development troubles, which are likely the biggest challenges they ever faced, they still pulled through despite their size, and still give us great Kirby games to this day.

It's just inspiring when you think about it, and it just might make me want to work there ten years from now, after college.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

I couldn't think of anything for Day 15 but on second thought I'll say Breath of the Wild. No particular reason, it's just a good game. It's not perfect but it's an experience that's for sure.

but I actually have no answer for 16 hard pass

Same shit.

This is a fangame in which you see how much heart and soul was put into. The devs made sure to really respect the story of Elibe and add things in it to make the game their own all the while keeping whatever makes Fire Emblem what it is. I dare even say now that this fangame has dethroned SMBX for me and is now my favorite, and guess what? It's not even finished! There still is to come!

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

Literally every game I've ever played, or at least seen other people play. I like to think up fan fictions for every character, change their behavior and personality so that they can be more likable in my eyes, and tell me their real stories.

Because of this, even though I might dislike a character in game for whatever reason comes to mind, I will have sympathy for every character, no matter what the games interpret them as, because it is unlikely that a character in a game is the same character outside that game.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

Just about any game really and it depends on my mood.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

Inspires? Not really any game that "inspires" me...
I'll pass, since I don't have an answer.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

The Fire Emblem games. It is what got me interested in a military career.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

Also can't seem to find an actual answer. It's the second day I left with no answers (cause there's also day 1).

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

Ah, I see that a lot of people have trouble answering this question. The main thing that that can be quite confusing is: what does "inspire" mean in this case? I have quite a few moments where some games do inspire me, but they are different.

snoopys-game-club_12.png

The first game that inspires me in a sense that made me realise that video games are fun is Snoopy's Game Club (DOS). This was the first game where not only did it caught my eye, but it also has an intuitive HUD which have a mix of images an text. For example, in the screenshot above, one Woodstock means 1 player, two Woodstocks means 2 players VS and one Woodstock + Charlie Brown means player vs CPU. The game doesn't have much depth, as it only have match-the-pairs, tile arrangement puzzle and spot the identical objects, but due to the characters and colourful game, it does feel like so much more. In other words, this is my gateway game, meaning that it's my primary game until I moved on to other games.

13-a.png

The next game that inspires me that games are more than the sum of its parts is Final Fantasy III/VI. There is a lot to be said about this game, but the most striking thing to me is the airship part. When I first control it, I felt like I can go anywhere I want, which is a magical feeling that when I stopped playing it, I had to come to the realisation that it's a game. Of course, there's the fact that the game's playable characters are quite wonderful, because they each have something unique about them, namely the music and their exclusive ability. Even the music sets the mood of the game, so for example, the Floating Continent gave me the chills because it had an ominous feeling in it.

von_title_screen_pencil.jpg

Then there is a game that inspires me that game development has interesting stories to tell, which is Bonnie's Bookstore. Popcap Games was prolific at that time, releasing a few games a year, and this was one of the games released in 2005. Unusually for this game, there is a blog where the developer written his story on how this game came to fruition. I used to think that video games were magic, so to learn that the process requires thought and effort to realise is one I found fascinating. If you don't want to read the link I posted, basically the developer wanted to develop a word game, and when he got some responses, he went with the Story Book style because it had the best response despite it being his least favourite concept. Another fascinating thing I thought was the development time, as he mentioned that about 6 months were spent on the game development, which tells me that video games aren't that easy to develop although the results can be great, since I liked this game.

latest

Finally, I need to nominate Splatoon (Wii U), because it is a game that, from recent memory, hooked me up as soon as I started playing, which is a rare feeling for me, because most of the time I have to spend some time with the game before it becomes something I enjoy. This is very inspiring because it reminded me that I used to have a huge excitement in playing games that I didn't feel at that time, and it's felt good to revitalise that feeling. I don't know if I would ever feel that, but I am forever grateful to the first Splatoon for this. I posted the screenshot of the Global Testfire because this was when it all started. The Direct back in May 2015 didn't feel like much, probably because I didn't know if I would ever enjoy this game, but the Testfire has sold me on it because it's fun in a way that I never had, namely that I get to team up with other people and that I have not played shooters seriously. This game ended up being my most played game, and a reason I got the Switch on the first year due to Splatoon 2.

Well, I hope this post gives others some inspiration on how to answer this question.

Thank you for reading.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

When I think of the word "inspire", that they have irl creative impact on me outside of video games. For me, Spore was an easy case to pick because it was one of the first things that jumpstarted me to want to become a 3D modeler.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 16: A game that inspires you

there's a lot of games that have inspired me to want to build things from them in minecraft which i never do

i guess paper mario inspired me to get into the mario series in general and also indirectly join here. I could answer a lot of questions with paper mario
