20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 20: A game that truly scared you

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 13: Favorite NPC or party member

As for NPC, I can't say I have found any of them I have had some significant attachment to. I do quite like the partner Pokemon from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games but I'm not like, zomg I really miss her and her dialogue once I was done playing. She could technically count as a favorite but...meeeeehhh..? I also sorta liked Wally from Pokemon Omega Ruby, I genuinely felt bad for effortlessly OHKOing his Ralts in Mauville City.

As for party member aside from the obvious Baby Luigi from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, I enjoyed being Raine in Tales of Symphonia. Probably because in our first playthrough of the game, with my brother and my twin sister, I was using her after Colette, so I just grew fond of using her. Don't mind being a bit of a support edge on the team, I enjoy playing that role.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 13: Favorite NPC or party member

i'm sure i have answers to this question but i literally cannot think of any constructive ones so I'll just say I liked doopliss and vivian

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Onwards, to Day 14! Your challenge: A game that never gets old!

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Metroid Prime I guess, this feels like a cop-out answer because it's my favourite game but I don't think there's any game that will never get old for me. There is absolutely always a tipping point where I will no longer enjoy a game or I'll need like 5+ years before I can bring myself to replay it.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Endless puzzle games are obvious answers personally, especially if they have a competitive variation. For this one, I will present some examples:

61Wvdn29vZL.png

The first and obvious game is Tetris. There is a reason Tetris is often hailed as a perfect game, since it has a simple concept that even gets ported well to LCD, and it's also simple to learn and play. The earliest Tetris is not the same as the modern Tetris, but both of them have their audiences. Classic Tetris only shows one future piece and pieces are randomised, which presents a challenge of its own. Modern Tetris has the makings of a competitive game, since it allows players to hold a piece, pieces are randomised in a way that prevents some pieces to appear too often over others, and it has a super rotation system that is standardised (so you know how pieces are rotated). I tend to prefer Modern Tetris because it makes for a very thrilling competitive game, so much so that we have a Tetris games where 99 players can battle each other.

For my second example, I present Puyo Puyo! The game didn't present its full potential in its first game where it's single player only, but when it became a head-to-head game, it truly has the making of an enduring game. To wit, the game rewards higher chain reactions by sending garbage Puyos to the opponent, meaning that chaining is a requirement to do well. The sequel to that game brought the game to new heights (called Tsu, meaning "Expert" and for being a pun of "two"), as it introduced offsetting, where if the player has garbage Puyos of their own, they need to clear chains themselves to mitigate the attack. This simple change made the game much more playable competitively, and to this day it's still being played competitively. When SEGA decided to bring Puyo Puyo to a new direction, they introduced Fever mode, which added a layer to strategy where offsetting brings the player closer to Fever mode, where preset chains appear and allow for a comeback. Personally I love Fever, though Tsu is good too.

tetris-and-dr-mario-03.png

For my final example I decided on something more familiar to the Mario boards: Dr. Mario. This game is about clearing viruses, and its simplicity due to having three colours made it quite accessible yet challenging. I think the new changes brought to Dr. Mario are genuinely great, such as Story Mode in Dr. Mario 64, the Virus Buster mode introduced in Dr. Mario's WiiWare game, L-pills in Dr. Luigi and making head-to-head faster-paced in Miracle Cure due to faster falling pieces and helpful items (the best introduction because Dr. Mario tends to be on the slow side compared to other competitive puzzle games).

Thank you for reading.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Have to go with Crash 2 again, though a few of my favourite games, SNES games like Yoshi's Island, and Tetris count as well.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Garry's Mod, Left 4 Dead 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and Spore: Galactic Adventures. They're in my top five favorite games that I just posted earlier, yeah but....you know, it's because they never get old is why they're my favorite games. All of these games have a very robust modding community, and many new mods are created to make parts of the game feel fresh again. Whether it's setting up NPC wars and posing for scenery with new maps and tools via Garry's Mod, downloading new maps for Left 4 Dead 2, roleplaying as cops in Grand Theft Auto V, and creating your own worlds, creatures, and NPC wars with Spore always makes this a new experience and never quite the same thing every time.

Hell, if I was stuck in an island, those games and perhaps Super Smash Bros. with mod support will keep me occupied forever. I keep mentioning the same games and stuff in my picks because I'm that invested in all of them, having poured more than 500 hours in all of those titles. Sandbox titles with no real objectives tend to rank among my favorite games of all time, because I enjoy setting up my own rules, making my own scenarios, and going at things at my own leisurely pace.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

I don't have a very specific answer to this, but any game that looks amazing in 16-bit or 32-bit pixelated graphics counts.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Super Mario 64/ Super Mario Odyssey, there’s always new power moons/ power stars to find, even if you searched every nook and cranny in an area, making every play feel new, and fresh.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

I'd go with Smash or another game I love, but I'll go with all the classic Sonic games (including Sonic Mania).

I never owned a Genesis to play them, but they had a mobile remaster that I own. But Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) doesn't have one for some reason (PLEASE, SEGA!!!!). I started a new save file countless amounts of times. Sonic 1 can be boring if you play it a lot, but I still have fun. Sonic 2 is the same, Sonic CD is fun, even thought some zones suck, and Sonic Mania is my all time favourite Sonic game. No matter how much I play it, I never seem to get tired of the game.

Can't say much about modern games, as I only have Sonic Forces and I haven't played it a lot (only 5 hours).

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Day 13: My NPC choice would be Esna from Ever Oasis, but I'm instead gonna focus on my favorite party members from that game instead, and I have 4 of them.

Kaela is a member of the Drauk tribe, a race of tall, female-only, humanoid lizards. A Drauk's weapon of choice is a spear, which has great power and reach, and Drauk members increase the attack power of your party. As for Kaela herself, her spear will drain the enemy's HP with every hit and she can also stun enemies for about 6 seconds using her special attack. Kaela can also dig for hidden items in the ground if you come across dirt piles, and having her in your party will also make you targeted by enemies less frequently.

Kaela is described as an honest Drauk who is conservative and fashionable, but she also is an introvert person. She has been by herself all of her life and isn't very good at talking to people, but she still wants to be your friend, later saying to you that you're the first seedling friend she's made. I particularly like her color scheme of white and light purple, and her clothing makes for an interesting contrast in comparison. Her voice is also pretty sweet to listen to.

tumblr_ovvwi9imDV1wwf0wto1_400.jpg

Miura is another member of the Drauk tribe, and the first one you can recruit as well. Her weapon will slowly fill up her SP meter over time, which helps with her Might of the Drauk ability, which costs 2 slots out of 3 to activate and lowers the attack and stamina of the enemy by 15 if they get hit by the attack. If she's in your party, you can't be KOd and you'll deal more damage as long as your HP is above 50%. She can also use her pickaxe to mine for hidden items inside stone crystals.

Miura is on a quest to find her younger sister Seipha, who left to train years ago and never came back. Esna describes Miura as being great at looking out for people and being very reliable, thinking one step ahead of everyone else and taking action. Miura also interacts with you pretty often throughout the story, which is a nice touch. I also like her overall design, particularly her golden armor.

Amshel is a seedling girl who runs a fabric shop. She thinks you are her biggest hero, and frequently blushes when you talk to her. She's a magician, and can heal 25% of all party members total HP up to 3 times. She can also use a paraflower to reach otherwise inaccessible areas, and if she is in your party, she will increase the efficiency of SP recovery skills by 25% (which includes her own that I described earlier). I find her design very cute, particularly her pink skin with those large eyes.

Z56iM6n.jpg

Isa is a seedling girl who runs a bakery. She's extremely shy, but does her best to talk with other people when needed, and she says to you that she becomes calmer when you're in her company. She's a crossbow user, and can gather multiple items when you defeat an enemy. As for her special abilites, she uses a paraflower like Amshel and can stun enemies using her crossbow, and a special trait of hers when she's in your party is doubling the duration of SP skills that weaken enemies (such as Miura's Might of the Drauk attack). As for Isa's design, I like it for much of the same reasons as Amshel's, but I also like Isa's green clothing, particularly her turban. I wish I had the sound file available, but her HUAGGHH scream when she gets sent flying often comes across as unintentionally hilarious to me, though I try my best to not get hurt when using her, as she has been very reliable to me on multiple occasions.

Day 14: There are so many games to choose from here, but I'm gonna pick Mario Party 6 and 7 for this. I can play these games on any day of the week for hours, and they never fail to entertain me, regardless if I play them by myself or with at least 1 friend.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

For me it is Mario 64, Sunshine, and even the Galaxy games.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Shorter games with high replay value like Pikmin or Star Fox 64 I'm more likely to return on repeat playthroughs.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

i think mario 64 has a good amount of replay value - I understand it's not the most entertaining to watch on repeat playthroughs since you can only really say so much as a viewer, but i don't find it much more tedious each time i redo 70 star runs as a player

also DMC3 has really good replay value with the different difficulties and bloody palace, and also i could probably replay the first 2 paper marios a lot of times in a row and still enjoy them

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Any Paper Mario game. Even Sticker Star. Really fun to go back to a lot.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

Another game challenge for today! A game that everyone should play at least once!

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 14: A game that never gets old

Super Mario Galaxy. Even though I hold the opinion that the sequel is better, if someone should only play one game in their entire life, it should be the original.

It just means a game soundtrack, that's all.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

There's a bunch to pick from, which one?

doom-ii-hell-on-earth-screen.png

I'll go with Doom II, rather than the original Doom, as it's pretty much the original Doom but better. Hell, it's still immensely fun to play today despite of the graphics and some of the game mechanics (such as not aiming vertically). You really couldn't go wrong with any Doom game, really, but this one's and the original one's a classic for a reason. They're heavily influential of the FPS genre, arguably even the birth of the genre similar to how Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong heavily influenced platformers. There's a reason a bunch of Doom clones exist, and indies that play in its manner are still popular today. Not to mention, the game has robust mod support, such as Brutal Doom, so fans are still making stuff for it despite its age today.

Hell, I should probably play it without cheats and all of that stuff. Another reason to play it is also because of cheats, you can give yourself god mode and not worry about having to die while trying to learn how the game works. That's how I fell in love with Doom, Starcraft, Diablo II, and other similar games as a young child and as an adult, I probably don't need those crutches any more to fully enjoy the game (or I can use them to just mess around with them like usual).

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

My first thought is a Mario Kart game, and the game would be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

250px-MK8_Deluxe_-_Box_NA.png

Although Mario Kart existed since the SNES, the original is probably difficult to recommend for everybody since it doesn't play with most of the other games. The Mario Kart games goes through a lot of refinement that make each passing game better and better, and while some of the games have weaknesses like Mario Kart Wii's item onslaught, its strengths cannot be understated. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a culmination of what Mario Kart has achieved:
  • It is a game that anybody could play: due to its arcade racer nature, the controls are easy to learn. It's also understood that to win, the player needs to reach the finish. Moreover, items help out players behind the pack to catch up so less-skilled players have a way to level the playing field. What is unique about 8 Deluxe is the fact that it has accessibility options, namely Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate, meaning that those who couldn't grasp the game's controls well could active them to make the game easier to control.
  • The game has a lot of customisation. Not only does this game have the most playable characters in a Mario Kart game, it also presents kart customisation, plus game customisation. The amount of customisation the player caters to anybody, so for example if one wants to have the best-looking kart or they want to have stats that are more specialised, they can do that. If they want to have a challenge with CPUs or they just want to be ahead of the CPUs, they can do that.
  • Battle Mode has a lot of variety, as they included 5 different modes, and with 8 maps, that's 40 combinations that could be done. Although to some the previous games' Battle Mode are better, I felt that this game's variety puts it at the edge.

NanoRim has just reminded me that Pokemon is a very viable option. The best game to start with is the latest one, because to quote Kat Bailey of USGamer:

With Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon now available, it's fair for a newcomer to wonder if the latest game is where they should start. After all, you wouldn't necessarily want to start with Dark Souls 3, or even the latest Assassin's Creed.

But here's the key to understanding Pokemon: You should always start with the latest game in the series. It's the easiest way to maximize your enjoyment while connecting with the community at large.

Thank you for reading.

Dark Souls Remastered.

It is a very challenging game, but it is rewarding when you first beat it.

Re: 20 Day Video Game Challenge - Day 15: Game everyone should play at least once

Smash Bros is obvious, and also that Mickey game I mentioned several times, but I'll go with Fortnite! (Just kidding that game is trash.)

What I meant to say was Super Mario Party!

SMP_Boxart.png

This game should be known for saving the Mario Party franchise. It should be played by every Mario Party 1 player or newcomers in the franchise.
