New releases! Option 1 for me.

Last year, we ate GOOD in regards to remakes. With the Switch 2 on the horizon, though, we want to see new releases; both because it's kind of a tough act to follow the absolute deluge of neat remakes from last year, but also... Show us the power of that thing! Give us a weird Pikmin spinoff where you get to control more than 100 guys! I want to see what the heck a Mario Kart 9 even means after a decade+ of being on the number 8! Do something weird with it! We're not expecting immediate gangbusters, but given how low-key the console reveal was, we can only hope that the launch titles for the first year can make up ground in wowing us and keeping it weird.

(as an aside: is that... really the name we're going with? It's not too late to be like. it's the Super Switch, or the Switch Plus, just, anything cooler than Switch 2... We'll get used to it, we've been around the "DS -> DSi -> 3DS" block before and come out the other end finding amusement in the fact that the "2DS" is a budget version of the 3DS, while the actual 2nd DS between the DS and 3DS is the DSi, but for now, we complain. ;P)

What are your thoughts on the recently released Donkey Kong Country Returns HD?
  • The game is excellent and I enjoyed it a lot.
  • While there are improvements that could be made, the game was good and I enjoyed it.
  • The game is good and I enjoyed it, but I prefer the Wii or 3DS versions.
  • The game is only okay, but I enjoyed it somewhat.
  • While the game itself is okay, I found it a considerable downgrade from the Wii or 3DS versions.
  • The game is bad, and I did not enjoy it.
  • I have not played Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, but I want to.
  • I have played the Wii or 3DS versions of the game and have no interest in the HD version.
  • I have not played a previous version of the game but I am not interested in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.

DK! Donkey Kong! Donkey Kong's latest... well, not really, but the most recent release dropped on the Switch a couple weeks ago! What did you think of the King of Kong's return?

I have the Wii and 3DS versions of the game, but I prefer the Wii version. I feel I would enjoy this HD version but I don't wanna spend $60 on it.

I've seen and heard issues brought up with the Switch version (FPS drops sometimes and especially the Co-op, video below explains in detail). It's a fine port, but I don't need or want it.

I also selected option 8. I have played the original Wii version of Donkey Kong country and enjoyed it, but I don't think the 3DS bonus levels and HD graphics are enough to justify a repurchase. I would only recommend it to people who haven't played a Donkey Kong Country Returns game since it's still a really good game.

I picked "I have played the Wii or 3DS versions of the game and have no interest in the HD version" (8th option)

I've played through the 3DS version and while I enjoyed it, I have no desire to go through it again. Yes it's fun, but not "I want to pay $60 to play it again" fun. At the very least this version doesn't require multi-cart multiplayer, since 3DS games tend to require multiplayer with multiple carts (only a few are Download Play compatible, like all Mario Party games).

Given how Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is basically a 3DS port with the extra levels and the graphics seemingly being ported from the 3DS version instead of the Wii version, it falls under the same umbrella as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD where it's a straight 3DS port that despite being practically the same game, is clearly priced to match the other games so that it doesn't appear devalued. Thing is, this strategy seems to be working despite the price, since Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is already a million-seller and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is likely to achieve the same milestone.

Who knows how Mario Golf World Tour would be like when that gets ported, which I think is more justifiable because a game like this could use a second chance AND all its DLC content will finally be available without paying separate for them (which you can't do now anyway).

Thank you for reading.

I have DKCR3D but I haven't bought Tropical Freeze and don't really have the most interest in more Donkey Kong. If I wanted more of Donkey Kong's brand of blisters I'd buy Tropical Freeze, which given old video game pricing is probably cheaper than DKCRHD is right now. The HD version would need some extra sweeteners for me to even consider it. I guess multiplayer counts as one, given DKCR3D is multicart, but I'd have to convince someone else to play a Donkey Kong game.

I do agree with the Nintendo switch online thing, because a lot of the games such as Mario Pinball, MVSDK, and Mario Artist/Paint are not there, I hope Nintendo does put out the game cube as one of their online stuff.
