  • What do you think of the idea of playable Mario in a Luigi's Mansion game? Feels like the state of playability is one-sided: every Mario series eventually get Luigi to be playable such as Dr. Mario and Super Mario Maker, but Luigi's games are (as far as I know) yet to put Mario as a playable character. Is Mario too big that making him have the same role as Luigi makes the latter redundant?

    nintendo's choices as to what characters get to be playable have always seemed really weird to me. i get that they have some weird internal brand purity thing where they don't want "spin-off characters" like wario or waluigi in "main games" but, did nsmbwii really need two toads? i mean i guess peach got kidnapped but, the plot of mario games is literally 100% superfluous so there's no reason they couldn't have just made it different and made peach playable. it's the same thing in luigi's mansion. why do you play as four luigis instead of luigi, mario, etc? or even original characters from luigi's mansion like e. gadd. nintendo works in mysterious ways. also add ashley to smash

    If the recent Mario 2D platformers are to go by, future games would likely have the second Toad be replaced with Toadette, which is a bit better than a second Toad. That would be good as long as Toadette does not have additional advantages over the other characters. At the very least it shows that first appearing in spin-offs isn't some dead end that some people like to believe (even if it's a very big exception to the norm).

    But yeah, Mario doesn't usually have identical clone playable characters (even in the first Mario Bros., Luigi is treated as an individual rather than a clone despite looking and playing like one). Luigi's Mansion? None of the extraneous Luigis are called anything else but "Luigi" as far as I know. It's so weird that Luigi's Mansion gave Luigi identical clones that they might as well have a "Luigi (species)" article for the sake of that.

    Heck why don't they just let you choose from a large roster of characters to tango against Bowser, Mario Party style? Story or lore isn't that important, character development is negligible, there has been no character quirks that developers have to worry about balancing or adjusting level design to accommodate? Modeling characters for a low-res/low poly game isn't all that hard even if you accommodate for powerup suits, and it's not like Nintendo has to make new HD renders for all of them since they just don't in the recent games. They can just use Peachette, Pink Gold Peach, Baby Rosalina, the Sprixie Princesses, or even just another Peach ala Luigi in Galaxy to make up for playable Peach.

    The four Luigi in Scarescraper was excusable in 3DS since they actually planned Mario, Peach, and Toad and didn't want to compromise on the download play multiplayer, but I'm not sure how difficult it will be for them to have goo forms of Peach, Mario, and Toad, doesn't seem difficult to me.

    At first when I read this comment, I thought it's in line with one of those comments expressed by those who disagrees with the direction their favourite series is heading. After knowing more, I understood what you meant.

    It's surprising that Luigi's Mansion does not currently have a mod that completely swaps Mario and Luigi's roles, making Mario the rescuer and Luigi the one stuck in the painting, including the cutscenes. There's only one mod but it still has some compromises. Not even the 3DS games have mods. Maybe the Switch game would be different.

    I kinda thought that people didn't mod certain games because they have a certain respect for it that they would not touch it. That includes the Gamecube Mario Party games. It's enlightening to know that it's more that modders don't find any area of interest in those games, instead of some hidden reverence to the games that I am not entirely aware of.

    I can understand the concern with not wanting people to make "bad meme mods" since I would have dislike it if somebody did something offensive if given the tools. In fact, I dislike a lot of Garfield "fan art" for the same reason. I suppose the advantage of the freedom of expression is worth way more than the concern of potential mischief.

    Nah, it's that reverse engineering files takes a lot of time, effort, maybe trial and error? It's understandable if reverse engineer programmers rather work on bigger games like Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. (Both which have the biggest Nintendo modding communities regularly) than spend a lot of times for things that don't have much payoff. That being said, afaik some Mario Party games already happen to have very similar or the same formats as other popular games such as Mario Party 9 having the same .brtsm music format or the same model format as Mario Kart (I forget but my sister did model replace). Super Mario Party does have texture and model formats that I believe the modding tool Switch Toolbox can use so that's why there are some mods. But it never gets bigger than simple texture edits and model imports, and that's from just small community or people just don't bother uploading mods maybe.

    While I understand that concern too, it's a fact of life thing you have to accept. What you do by withholding tools is that you're hurting the modding community as a whole. Companies shouldn't withhold tools like Krita or Photoshop because people make bad Garfield fanart. It's a narrow mentality that is also too paranoid. It ends up hurting your reputation too.

    I think not only they withhold tools, they also want you to pay for some, if I recall correctly, which I find to be not only against the modding spirit but also unnecessarily treading a murky legal zone that's easily avoided. I also don't find it really ethical to profit off reverse engineering others' work too.
    I miss "good choice" from the Mario Party games.

    I really miss those because lesser-seen characters like Daisy and Waluigi were able to say more than what amount to catchphrases. Toadstool Tour especially gave them far more to say that I can't help but appreciate those. Neither character's voice actors ever did a character interview as those characters, and in Martinet's case, he did one for Mario, Wario and even Luigi (plus, the three were voiced in his Vine account) and that's such a pity since Martinet's not getting any younger.

    Wario may be under the same category as Daisy and Waluigi, but he's safe because he's got WarioWare to turn to for exerting his personality. Plus, a Nintendo subsidiary loves him (which is why Wario can have several games).

    Makes me wish there's a Daisy game because the energy expressed by Deanna Mustard is infectious (the good kind, in my opinion), and that would allow Daisy to properly further establish her character.

    Mario Kart Tour is the worst Mario Kart game in the series. It's surprisingly hard to argue otherwise.

    Yeah, I'm not really a huge fan of the "gacha" style of unlocking things.

    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still my portable Mario Kart of choice.

    They're not really targeting you, though, they're targeting kids that have no sense of money, people with poor impulse problems, and addicts who live difficult lives trying to get better (and some addicts have turned to video games for relief).

    What do you think are the problems with Mario Kart 7? I know it's a rushed game, but I would be interested to know some issues with that game.

    I'm not LGM, but I still have many problems with the game that I'd like to share.
    • No Vs. Race
    • Equipment is tedious to unlock, due to the above, and that Time Trials doesn't add to the Coin count.
    • The requirements for Gold pieces are far too high (10,000 VR when you start with 1000, actually expecting people to get more then five hits with StreetPass) even in coin form (10,000 15,000 and 20,000)
    • Some of the worst track design in the series
    • This game is also where I feel Blue Shells are at their worst. They bounce the player multiple times, and every time it happens near a ledge I end up having to reposition myself afterwards as the Blue Shell almost knocks me off the ledge.
    • The roster is also one of the worst, with many of the veterans that cut and newcomers that got added being rather questionable.

    Shy Guy on Wheels summed up what I said. But I disagree on the track design. Game has really good track design. The only stinkers are Cheep Cheep Lagoon and Maka Wuhu, the rest of the Nitro tracks range from good (Daisy Hills, Bowser's Castle) to excellent (Neo Bowser City, Music Park, Rock Rock Mountain, Shy Guy Bazaar, Rainbow Road, DK Jungle). The retro tracks are solid though some of the selection is disappointing, as it's the third game in a row to have an SNES Mario Circuit and GBA Bowser's Castle.

    I also disagree on Spiny Shells. It's no different from the other contemporary Mario Karts. I do think the random flipping can cost a race since it can throw you off a ledge (SNES Rainbow Road is a culprit).

    The roster had questionable cuts, but all newcomers are good. Metal Mario might be the weakest character but he still has a unique attribute of being a small heavyweight. H. Queen is really good and adds needed variety not only to the roster but the heavyweight class. Wiggler is another great addition. Shy Guy also appears fully playable. Lakitu is quirky enough to be here. Cutting Waluigi raises eyebrows as well as making Wario unlockable, but the newcomer choice is much better in this one than in Mario Kart 7.

    The coin grind IS ridiculous, though. I don't touch online, so I did muscle 20,000 coins. It's tedious and not fun.

    Battle Mode is actually very solid. It lacks options, however, like timers, battle course amount is bare minimum, Palm Shore is garbage by being a small stage that clusters all item boxes in the center, and the Lucky Seven in shells only is absolute jank.

    The Star got nerfed hard.

    No bikes.

    Items are fun. I miss the Tanooki Tail. It's far better than the piece of trash the feather is in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. We also don't have the coin item either.

    The multiplayer is stupid, though. Local player requires extra cartridges unless you really like Shy Guy and no other options really. They just copy-pasted from online, though, which is extremely lazy. There's execrable timers everywhere from the menu to how long you can stay on a track (which timers also ruined in Mario Kart 8), how long you can stay in the results, how long you can stay in the trophy screen, can't pause in the middle of a match, can't go back a menu if you don't like who's in the match, some stupid track selection roulette that wastes your time, and sometimes there's ping that screws up your shells.
    This is my Walmart today. Can't buy any games from these cabinets at all.

    I played a lot of Super Mario Odyssey. If you think the media pundits covering video game recently look demonically possessed and trying to divert attention away from workplace abuse from the industry and how Trump is diverting funds away from health and education to pay for an oversized garden fence, well, you're on to something.
    It's a shame that the authors behind the Super Luigi Odyssey mod are prime grade assholes Wexos and Atlas (YouTube handle AtlasOmegaAlpha). They're the type that don't want to release the tools they made for modding because they think it'll hurt the modding community (and I guess their reputation?) by allowing people to make crap with their tools. It's a stupid attitude to have. They also don't release some mods they promote such as making a Road Jetter mod for Mario Kart, which is also a very dick move. It would make my day if someone else made their mods and released them.

    I think the amount of appreciation they get is proportional to the stuff they make. Your audience for mods for games such as Mario Kart or Super Mario Odyssey are broke, young people who really cannot pay you more than a like on your release video or showcasing off the mod in YouTube videos. Hell, their Super Luigi Odyssey mod is extremely popular, and it has gotten games journalists to write articles about it as well as being the subject of several YouTube Let's Plays. I say that's the most they'll get out of mods in general, especially of their quality and scope. Frankly, I've seen bigger and better mods out there than their mods, and those are released for free still.

    The little chicks are so hard to find without binoculars! They blend in the ground so perfectly that you have to be patient and know exactly where to look to find them!
    Quick Time Events are also one of those gameplay mechanics whose cheap implementation negatively affects my experience on video games as a whole. I really didn't like how that Tomb Raider game implemented it at all and now every time I see a flashy cutscene in some other big budget action game, I anticipatze and dread a QTE rather than enjoy the cutscene.

    Shenmue I and II basically kinda pioneered and re-introduced the concept of quick time events in games. Shenmue was a game so far ahead of it's time and is a prime classic example of how QTE events should be done.

    It was more consistent in its mechanics.
    Games that grade you on your performance after you clear, I tend to burn out faster probably from morale and pressure to do perfectly rather than enjoy the game. Can't hold my attention on Sonic, Bayonetta, GTA V's story mode, Kirby Mass Attack, etc.

    I'm not a fan of those games because...why the heck I'm being graded, I'm not in school.
    I wasn't aiming for one, but I somehow got a hole in one in Mario Golf World Tour as Mario. Too bad it was a match play so I didn't get to see the fancy eagle animation.
    Some of terrible Spongebob's episodes during Season 4, 5, 6, *aka the infamous seasons) would've made for a pretty great horror parody of Spongebob. Episodes I had in mind: "To Love a Patty" Spongebob horrifically rips clams apart over a rotting Krabby Patty. "Skill Crane": Mr. Krabs exploits gambling addicts and the episode overall paints a weirdly mature and uncomfortably too-close-to-home picture of addiction. "Gone" has Spongebob going into psychological breakdown for finding no one around for extended amounts of time. "One Coarse Meal" is just thoroughly messed up as Plankton contemplates suicide. "Squid's Visit" dials up Spongebob's creepiness to 11 and there's real psychological horror elements that that does feel genuinely horrifying at points. IMO they could've made for good, memorable episodes if they weren't part of, y'know, Spongebob.

    Unlike the game form of soiled Chinese takeaway carton, however, you can still get really far ahead if you take shortcuts consistently. Also, easy and normal difficulties are very easy for me, it's just hard that exacerbates the item problems.
