so I was at work today doing dishes when suddenly i started hearing the mlp theme song in my head

So it uh, happened.

Again.

Not that I'm complaining since I don't have The Hub and just watch it on Youtube. Anyway I'll probably post my thoughts later.

Are you talking about being caught watching ponies?
Or your TV being stolen by ninja cows?

Decent episode today, a little more entertaining then the previous one given the humor and the return of the badass looking Timberwolves. But still falls short of what we saw in Episodes 5-7 this Season. Spike episodes are usually pretty average though, Secret of my Excess might be the only exception IMO.

Didn't like the 3D on the Timberwolves, Spike commenting on Rarity's chewing was creepy, and it seemed a little cruel of the main six to stage the fake timberwolf attack (even if that wasn't their intention) because of how terrified Spike looked.

On another note, I saw a dude wearing a "Twilight Sparkle used Lecture! It's super-effective!" shirt at dinner tonight.

With being two weeks from a new episode. I say we change subject to some of the fanmade stuff for a little bit. I'll start by plugging something of my own for a little bit. I have been working still on the Genie Twilight blog that I made back in October. It has over 200 posts, and over 250 followers as of so far.

I'd also like to say that Genie Twilight is going to be part of a co-operative blog with others who have Twilight centric ask blogs called the Twibrary. It even has a story: "After Evil Genius Twilight and Werelight discover an abandoned library, they decided to refurbish it with the help of the other Twilights of Tumblrpon. But there's more about the library than meets the eye...". I'm real excited to be a part of that, so if you're a fan of any Pony ask blogs. Especially Twilight ones, please consider checking the Twibrary from time-to-time.

Once again, writing this while I watch the new episode (Spike at Your Service)... Once again, incoming wall of text

OMG, Spike's just so cute! Sometimes I forget this since there are so many other cute things in the show, but, you know, baby dragon Spike, he's adorable!

Wait... Celestia is ASSIGNING Twilight books to read? This is something new! It feels like, like stated in the season premiere, she really IS taking her studies to the next level! Not to mention, I wonder what's in those books that are so important that Celestia would want her to read...

lol, Spike's got a silly list of things to do! X3

I think it's funny that Spike smells his own smelly feet (which he openly admits is smelly) but doesn't seem grossed out or even goes "eugh" by it. It's like of like how we all feel about our own B.O., it doesn't bother us like it does other people.

Why'd Spike use all that parchment just for 3 things?

Whoa, whoa, whoa... This is a collaberative episode... from both Dave Polsky AND Merriweather Williams?! Like, hold up, since when were they given all these episodes to write? I mean, first the news that
Dave would be writing the Fluttershy/Discord episode,
and now THIS?! Sure, their two episodes this season were pretty good, but given their track record so far, I don't know about letting them write this many episodes, especially in a season this short. Also, apparently Dave Polsky was in charge of the story while Merriweather Williams actually wrote the episode, kind of like how Putting Your Hoof Down's story came from Charlotte Fullerton. I don't know, I just don't completely trust these two quite yet.

I think Spike chasing after the hot air balloon is quite adorable, especially him saying "run-away balloon" and having his arms outstretched! Also, a sudden thought occurs... just how long is this after Secret of My Excess? Like... have the ponies of Ponyville really gotten over the fact that Spike completely destroyed their town? Not to mention, isn't that the same balloon Twilight and her friends use all the time? Then again, another pony used it in The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well, so perhaps it's just up for rent to whoever feels the need to use it.

These crazy antics Spike gets into aren't as exaggerated as I expect from a pair like Dave Polsky and Merriweather Williams... It kind of makes me wonder if... I don't know, I don't want to say "learned from their mistakes" or even listened to the complaints, because I feel bad for people giving them crap all the time, even though I DO feel like they were indeed the worst writers this show had up until this season...

Okay, here's the scene from the preview... I'll say it before and I'll say it again, I think the inclusion of 3D CG graphics in an otherwise 2-dimensional Flash-made show feels awkward; they don't look quite right, and I don't really see the point, either. Why couldn't the timberwolves just be animated like they were in Family Appreciation Day? Not to mention, as intimidating as they are, they seem to have been taken out pretty easily. Don't even need to clang any pots to ward them off, just throw rocks at them.

You know, I didn't notice this before, but the timberwolves do seem to breath their nasty breath on Spike a lot, and the show shows us Spike holding his nose by it, indicating that he doesn't like it. Now, storytelling logic dictates that this aspect come into play later on, since after all, why bother even including it? Why bother showing that Spike doesn't like the smell coming from the timberwolves? Hopefully it will come into play later on, I just felt like pointing that out, since I didn't notice it before.

Also, I just realized, why doesn't Spike just set the timberwolves on fire? I mean, they're MADE OF WOOD! I guess he was too distracted by their smell...

I just can't get over how adorable I think Spike looks... he's a pudgy widdle babeh dwagon! X3

Um... sorry about that...

Oh-HO, so those timberwolves AREN'T so easy to beat!

So, Spike insists on serving Applejack... That, along with the hug before, kind of suggests that he's doing this more subconsciously then actually saying I should do this, like it's something that dragons do... Since he doesn't mention the "Noble Dragon Code", this could mean that he doesn't know about that (which makes sense, seeing as there's almost nothing about dragons in Ponyville's library), but still does it because that's part of who dragons are as a species. I like this angle!

Also, Spike and Apple Bloom, yay!

Too bad it's kind of brief... Not to mention, Spike seems to ignore how he knocked the suds on Apple Bloom. Then again, Spike's been known to be a bit careless before... Although, really, his carelessness is in terms of treating other ponies, he's usually quite good at fulfilling tasks and duties... makes me wonder how/why he'd mess up on something like this, or spilling those apples before.

Apple Bloom's gone already... and she's adorable, too. Looks like more time to devote to just Applejack and Spike!

lol, the pig's back in the mud! XP

Okay, seriously, why is Spike messing things up like this? Spike's USED to doing stuff like cleaning and fetching things for Twilight? Not to mention, he clearly is a good baker since he bakes cookies! Why is he so careless now?! Could it be his eagerness to serve Applejack? Would that REALLY make him LESS useful then when he doesn't HAVE to serve somepony, like he does with Twilight? You'd think he'd be even MORE adept at doing tasks, if this is a biological dragon thing, like I assumed... Maybe it isn't, but we'll see... Still is kind of weird that he's suddenly so bad at this.

So, uh, I don't normally mix water and flour often, but does it USUALLY get this sticky?

Oh-HO! A "Spike the Dragon Code"... So it really IS something he just made up. Not a normal dragon thing, just wants to help because he feels he needs to. So much for that "biological" theory I had... Still doesn't explain why he's suddenly so bad at helping out, though.

Geez, Twilight, you think you could pay attention to Spike for one second. I mean, I KNOW you have a lot of books to read, but, you know, Spike realizes that you have something important for you to do and wouldn't bother you unless it's something important? I dunno, maybe I'm overly sensitive to this kind of stuff, but I think this unaware insensitivity is the WORST kind of insensitivity there is. Like, when others MEAN to be insensitive, that's fine, because that's just who they are, but if you mean well and are normally nice, it just feels a lot more crueler to see this kind of stuff.

"Sounds good"? So, wait, was Twilight really paying attention then? Okay, in that case, *bleep* you Twilight, you should KNOW how seriously Spike takes himself, remember Owl's Well That Ends Well? If she had just ended that with a "hmm-mmm" like usual, I would have assumed she really wasn't paying attention, but this really DOES come of like she knows what Spike's doing and doesn't care! I don't care WHAT she says to justify herself later on, this is just coming off as too mean and disconnected to someone who's known her his whole life! I mean, Spike just basically said he's going to serve Applejack from now on and not her, and she's just like "okay". Again, if it seemed like she wasn't fully paying attention, I wouldn't have a problem with this, but instead, it just comes off as Twilight WAS paying attention, she just doesn't care and/or isn't taking Spike seriously. Whatever happened to taking Spike's feelings into her consideration from, again, Owl's Well That Ends Well? Sorry for going on this mini-rant, I just really don't like how this scene plays out.

Well, it's a good thing that Spike isn't TOO bothered by this...

Again, it feels weird that Spike's suddenly so bad at serving ponies... It's almost like he was written that way specifically for this episode...

>: \

...Anyway, I wonder what that pie tastes like... Not to mention, I can't wait to see Rarity's reaction to it! XP

I just love seeing Spike so enamored with Rarity (I hope I used that word right)... I actually half expected the pie to taste good... you know, just as a joke, since Rarity took so long to take a bite out of it.

And suddenly Rainbow Dash! Wait, AJ has an unfinished novel? I also like how Rainbow Dash used to think reading is for "eggheads" and now suddenly is in the process of writing her own novel. Not to mention, Rainbow Dash seems to undermine Spike's devotion. When he puts his mind to something, he sticks to it... Making the upcoming scenario she has in mind all the more hilarious!

You know, I can't help but feel that Rainbow Dash is the type that would "give up after 3 rocks"... Also, I wonder if she's really going to smash through all those rocks. Not to mention, he seems to be really good at piling up those rocks... It's almost as if he was specifically written to succeed in this particular task...

>: \

And now Fluttershy, yay! :D

RD sure smashed those rocks good! She's just that awesome!

Spike scratching AJ's back... Um, you know what, nevermind.

Spike's first mini-song! This season has a whole bunch of firsts!

Okay... So, seriously, what the frick? Twilight can ignore Applejack YELLING, but a little "clank" from an ink dish scares her out of reading? Is she just that thick, or is it... that the writers thought it would be funny...

>: \

Wait, so now dragon codes ARE a biological thing? What? Also, where did Twilight find out how important "dragon codes" are? Did she just know because of her time spent with Spike or something? Did she read about it in one of her new books that Celestia assigned? Or in the "deus ex machina" book from Too Many Pinkie Pies? Geez, this is confusing...

You know, Pinkie's Pie's hornet plan doesn't sound too bad... Except Spike would PROBABLY ask why she was shot out of a cannon and would probably sense that the life-saving situation was manufactured and feel he didn't fulfill his duty... Also, why the mustache?

Why not? :P

Also, I can see where this is coming a mile away... Applejack "pretends" to be attacked by timberwolves, only for REAL timberwolves to attack and Spike to really save her life... You know, this episode really IS as predictable as "MLP episodes based on pre-existing sitcom stories" go... I don't even think it's doing anything all that differently.

Wait, Fluttershy's wearing mini-barrels or mini-butter churners on her hooves? I guess I'll know what that's about eventually... Also, I like how Rarity asks Applejack for her best "damsel in distress" act... From both Rarity, AND AJ! XD

That's an AMAZING timberwolves call from Rainbow Dash! Wonder what other kinds of calls she can do...

I like Rarity's acting, it was perfect and believably... Pinkie Pie didn't even try, though.

It's a good thing Spike is so naive, that phoney-looking timberwolf has him fooled... too bad Applejack *bleep*s it all up. Not only does is AJ's acting terrible, but she WAYS TOWARD the phoney timberwolf just to put her hoof in the pile! Come the frick ON AJ, this is your plan, you should have known better...

Oh-HO (I seriously don't know why I keep saying that, but whatever), so the timberwolf's breath DOES come back into play! Incredible that Spike managed to fall for everything else yet picked up on that small detail. I guess the writers knew what they were doing with that all along.

That rock seemed awfully small for AJ to say "ow" to... You could have used a bigger rock to crush her legs... You know, make it more believable, what's about to happen next, and I think we ALL know what's about to happen next...

Dang... Those timberwolves ARE pretty scary... Making themselves that big and all... Also, AJ doesn't look THAT stuck, even though now she really is supposed to be stuck. I think they could have made it look more convincing...

Alright, so half the time the timberwolf is CG, half the time it isn't... It's so surprising that half the time I can't tell the difference.

...what. What? WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?! THE TIMBERWOLF CHOKES ON A ROCK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I didn't think I'd have to use this, but:

134371945456.jpg

SPIKE CAN *bleep*ING BREATH FIRE, AND HE INSTEAD TAKES OUT THE TIMBERWOLF WITH! A! ROCK?!?!?!?!?!? I mean, for God's sake, we've SEEN that taking the timberwolves out with rocks doesn't work, and MAYBE it was just an excuse to give Spike and AJ enough time to get away, but COME ON! How does a timberwolf even BREATH if it's made out of wood? I know it has bad breath somehow, but if the wolves can be broken apart and come back together so easily, then why would this even be an issue! This is almost as stupid as... as...

As the resolution for Over a Barrel, one of Dave Polsky's other episodes.

Oy...

Okay, lesson learned, and... cute little scene where Spike tries to shake AJ's hoof, but instead opts for a bro-hoof/hoof-bump instead. ;)

No letter to Celestia again, but Spike's back to helping out Twilight, and is just as eager as he is before... I wonder if he'll start messing up again.

Okay, this I'm not going to put under a spoiler, because I REALLY want to vent this out (and it doesn't really reveal anything in the episode specifically).

So... phew, wow. I don't know what to say. This has easily been the worst episode of this season thus far... Like, I don't even know what to say. I don't *hate* it, nor do I think it's nearly as bad as Dave Polsky or Merriweather Williams' other episodes, but I think the problem here was in the premise itself. I don't like most of Merriwilliams' other episodes because they had a lot of potential behind them and she just bogged it down with her sub-par writing skills, and I don't like Dave Polsky's other episodes because they're usually just plain stupid. This episode seems to be a mix of their worst qualities, Merriweather's "episode convenient" writing and Dave Polsky's "stupid resolutions". Which sucks because it seemed like they both improved with this season with Too Many Pinkie Pies and Wonderbolts Academy. But I think what makes this a bad episode is that it really is a story that's been done to death a million times over, and there just isn't anything interesting or new this episode brings to that formula. And yet, I can't bring myself to really hate it or feel like it's all that bittersweet like any of Dave and Merriweather's other episode because it's either not stupidly offensive enough to warrant hate or it's not an incredible disappointment. Even though I think this might actually be worse than some of their other episodes, I feel the need to be lenient on them this time around... I dunno, maybe it's just because the rest of this season has been so awesome and there are only a few episodes left, can't really get all that mad.

Not to mention, there are some cute and funny things in this episode, it just had a lot of really contrived and dumb stuff in it, too. Eh... maybe I need some more time to reflect on this episode...

I think M.A. Larson or Meghan McCarthy would be my favorite writers.

I think those two are my favorites as well. They both wrote my favorite episodes of the series (Cutie Mark Chronicles and Magic Duel for Larson. Lesson Zero and Canterlot Wedding from Meghan McCarthy.) Honorable mention to Cindy Morrow though for Sisterhooves Social and Hurricane Fluttershy especially. The writer of Sleepless in Ponyville if she makes any more of the quality of that ep she could also become a fast favorite of mine.

in my honest to good opinion this episode is a waste of time that I wont watch

So it turns out I was wrong that Season 3 was going to end on a two parter. I suppose on the bright side that means there's still a chance for a Rarity episode before the Season ends. Also the episode Just for Sidekicks is being written by the same new writer behind Sleepless in Ponyville. Hope she's able to make that one nearly as good as that one was. And the Season Finale was written by M.A. Larson (Sweet 8))

Just saw Apple Family Reunion. It was okay, didn't really care for the song, and I don't see how building a farm brings people together.

Also, farms aren't built in a few hours.
