Suggestions for Improvement

I've recently come across something helpful on another forum.

On the NationStates forum, whenever you're quoting a post, it will automatically limit the number of quotes you can have in a post to two. It doesn't tell you this - it automatically deletes the quotes inside and only leaves the two most outside quotes.

For example, look at this sample quote mountain.
1. Oldest post
2. reply to 1
3. reply to 2
4. reply to 3
5.reply to 4
On NationStates, quotes/posts 1, 2, and 3 would be automatically deleted by the forum after you click the post button, leaving only
4. reply to 3
5.reply to 4
We've already done something akin to this with spoiler tags by not displaying spoilers within spoilers.
This sentence is spoilered again, but you can't tell because it's automatically edited out.
I don't know how this would be accomplished, but it would but a stop to quote mountaineering.

I really don't agree with the idea that it's a user's job to do a board search every single time he or she creates a thread.

Say Wamario53434 makes a thread called "what's your favorite car" and BirdoMiniMod994 makes a post like "HAHAHA YOU STUPID ASSHOLE, WE HAD THAT THREAD 4 YEARS AGO. LRN2USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!!!"

I don't think we have a consistent policy on it, but my opinion is that if a thread is a certain age with no replies, it's okay to make a new thread. My views (probably) don't reflect those of the other staff, so maybe it's a good idea for us to discuss this further behind the scenes.

I agree with you on this. Also, bumping dead threads should be somewhat discouraged. I've updated Rule 14 to reflect these ideas, but it's more of a guideline.

Do not create a new topic for subject(s) which already have an active topic. If a topic already exists but hasn't received a reply for some time (say at least four months), a new topic is generally preferred over bumping the old topic, but use your best judgement.

The 4 months thing is consistent with the SMF warning of replying to old topics.

Could you please possibly change the registration form to do away with the captcha and find some other way of stopping spam? You've already got about five questions about Mario which no spammer under the sun could possibly answer, and it's nearly impossible to read the captcha if you get unlucky. Maybe tie the forum into an anti spam service like stop forum spam or akismet instead?

Because I kind of wanted to join here a few months or so ago, but pretty much gave up on it because of the whole registration system issue.

The current captcha is an unspeakable horror, so I very much support this suggestion.

Unfortunately, I still delete spam accounts on a regular basis.

I think we should make use of the News function that SMF has, so we can inform people of changes to rules and promotions/demotions, etc.

I also per this suggestion.
Me too.

I'm thinking that the name and/or description of Mindless Junk should be changed. Too many new users look at the board and think that it's an excuse to make useless posts there.

I've seen people try to use the description as a justification to posting stuff against the rules, in the past.

But I don't think we should change the name.
