i was being sarcastic about the sword

there wouldn't be any reason to show it if it wasn't going to play some part in the story

Yeah, no shit.

Your comment just reminded me that I thought the sword getting involved was interesting too, which I meant to bring up earlier, but didn't because I got distracted by Paradox Space, so I took the opportunity to finally say what I had to say about it all.

Speaking of DocScratch being an insufferable piece of omnishit and Paradox Space, what's your opinion on the comic where he and Hussie play chess? I think it's absolutely amazing. Probably my favorite thing on the site.

It's not even a nipple.

But yeah despite what I said earlier about being angrier with Hussie about Rose's death than Scratch, that comic was hilariously... I'm going to make a new word here and say katharmic. Cathartic and karmic. I'm a genius.

What no, that was my favorite before yours. You don't even play chess.

I like Scratch in that one Paradox Space. It's a very fun comic (although I don't quite get the last page), and the writer doesn't quite nail that aspect of Scratch's diction that makes me wanna claw my eyes out and flog him with the bloody remains of my optic nerves. I DO think he's a pretty interesting character, and an integral part of a cool story, and I enjoy how creepy he is and how the other characters interact with him (be it Rose, Crowbar, whoever), but I dunno, I just hate "hearing" him speak.

I absolutely do play chess, I just haven't done so in several years and am very rusty. So rusty, a child could probably beat me, which is why I don't flaunt that fact very often.

I very much like him getting served a generous helping of humble waffles for once. I'm not the biggest fan of omniscient characters in general, or at least the ones that involve themselves in things and try to convince us their ability to manipulate people is something impressive.

Manipulating people by guessing what they're going to do and playing that reaction in your favor, that's impressive. If you don't have to guess because you already know however, it removes all skill from that and turns it into something trivial.

But people still play Scratch up as some sort of ingenious puppet master for some silly reason. If you want an actual ingenious puppet master, look at how Terezi played the very same omniscient being into doing her bidding and blowing up Vriska for her. Now THAT's skill.

I wonder if we'll ever know the full conversation Scratch and Gamzee had during that freeze-frame moment in Cascade.

Mmmk. It was my favorite first though.

idk why i am so territorial over this

It was interesting seeing the different styles of John art side-by-side (bonus points for actually making him look like he's grown up during the 3 years), but yeah, as a whole I was never a huge fan of the retcon stuff. I mean, on the one hand, I can understand the appeal of exploiting how the images can be updated for the retcon stuff, as part of the whole "nu internet mediaz" angle Homestuck has (like the hybrid format of text, images, videos, music and games). And in a way, while the live updates are the "change the past" variety of time-travel, which I hate to no end, since the changes are actually being made to the old pages, for the archive reader, it's the "stable loop" version, where the changes happened all along, which is the type of time travel I DO like. But even then, while most of the blobs and random arms (and maybe even the odd hidden John) are hidden decently well, other times, it's blatant and distracting.

I'm also getting really worried that it was all a doomed timeline of some sort now - which bifurcated when John interrupted Dave and Jade without getting tackled away, at which point Dave said something about being mad if they all die as a result of John's meddling. After all, when Dave flies over to the mess on LOFAF, we just see him leaving the Mayor on the tower, with no mention of whether the lava near-miss happened or not, leaving it concerning ambiguous.

I dunno, the whole "John pounces - then he doesn't - then he does again" sequence was confusing (and not in a good way), even with the origin of the pouncing John now made known to us. Hopefully it'll be explained more sooner or later.

I just think, while I guess it had some entertainment value when it was introduced, it's getting annoying that he keeps fucking around with old panels, and at this point I'm getting worried what else he is going to alter. Now apparently even flash movies aren't safe anymore.

I believe there's a certain... sanctity to old panels in a comic, and that shouldn't be fucked around with unless it's for fixing mistakes or there's no way around it. He's pretty much erasing the version of the comic that got people into the story years ago. The unaltered versions of those panels/movies are gone, unless you saved them to your computer. For the fans that's some pretty essential shit that's getting messed with here.

It's still kind of low-key-ish and manageable right now, but I don't like where this shit is going. At all.

we'll have to see how it turns out

i mean yeah the potential for serious disruption is there but i don't think he's going to totally ruin the comic

Well I am a doofus because 2257 just told me you can totally still access the unaltered panels by going to the URL and deleting the word "retcon".

Derp.

2257 is a great and smart man. I am what's left.
