Unpopular opinions about the Mario series

Mario sucks in Smash Bros.

Like more than most people already think.
He doesn't suck. There's a difference between being unpopular and just making things up.

He's not uber tier, but he's not terrible. It's only in Brawl where he's truly terrible. If you look at tier lists, he stands in the mid-high tier in 64, mid tier in Melee, and bottom tier in Brawl. I hate tier lists a lot, but they're telling. He has amazing combo potential in 64, has simple potential in Melee, and in Brawl... eh.... his advantages are his quick moves and his amazing off-ledge game (cape, FLUDD, b-air, wall-jump, so many freaking options); his downfalls are his lame recovery and lack of range and aerial kill moves.

Another problem is that there is a sore lack of dedicated Mario mains. While you can argue that it's because he's a bad character, there aren't any Mario main equivalents of the likes of Gimpyfish (Bowser) or Taj (Mewtwo). It's a vicious cycle: he's deemed a bad character, nobody uses him, and since nobody uses him his potential can possibly be left unrealized.

Of course I'm biased for Mario. I'm not hiding it. <3 :fancy: <3
Doc at least gets some attention in Melee. As for Mario mains, Mango used to have a good Mario.

Yeah mango sort of dropped off with mario.

Now Scorpion Master on the other hand is the true Mario God.

(though last time I saw Mango's Mario at KoC4 it was still really good so I'm not sure why you're saying used to be)

isnt mario a very powerful character in ssb4 though?

I know from fighting him and using him he's improved to unbelievable limits.

I should check out some amazing Mario players sometime, lol.

He doesn't seem awfully buffed compared to Brawl, IMO, although the buff is still obvious.

idk ive used mario in like every smash game and he seems to be at his best in smash 4

he hits harder, his meteor attack is better, and is generally more useful.

id mention the ai but considering the ai has sucked hard in the first 3 games i guess thats not saying much

Mario AI loves to jump into One-hit kill Flippers in Balloon Fight, so...

I think Mario's at his best in Smash 64, since he has semi-spike (you can't cancel out of meteor smashes), a down special that can grant him much more height than in Melee, and his down-special is hard to DI out of due to Smash 64's insane hitstun. He also has pretty good attacks bar d-tilt and the somewhat laggy u-tilt and f-smash (d-smash is generally better anyway). On the flipside, he doesn't have cape, nor the meteor-smash (although his f-air is like Diddy's f-air in Brawl; a strong attack forward, a good attack) and he's not really fast in the air, and wall jumping has yet to exist.

Mario's good in Melee, but his recovery sucks and he just doesn't feel as good. So, I'd say the mid-tier placement is pretty accurate.

Mario's awful in Barlw. He lacks KO power, his range is awful, and FLUDD is a waste of a move. His back grab is simply awful compared to the one in Melee; the lack of knockback from that move has thrown me off (no pun intended) several times. Pretty much no combo potential. Despite this, I haven't seen anyone in the Brawl environment use and win with Mario like a beast but that's from my own ignorance.

Mario's good in Smash 4, but I don't know how good relative to everyone else. His flaws in Barlw seem to continue biting him, but I think his moves have better knockback in general and he just has better momentum, but I can credit the general environment change rather than actual buffs. That being said, he feels like better_Barlw_Mario than an independent buffed character.

Honestly I feel like the reason I didn't want to play 4 is I downloaded the demo and FLUDD was still there.

Might be significant to note I mained him in Melee

There's a custom that makes fludd do damage.

I'm a devout Mario main, but I'll still use Mario even if all of his specials are replaced with FLUDD and all his moves make him die in one hit. Well, maybe not, but you get my point?

Well, doc has lower mobility, granting him worse recovery and just overall mobility, but he's still dang fun to use.

I wish people couldn't air dodge while tumbling because that would've opened up so much more opportunities for doc and maybe a lot of other characters too.

Dr. Mario didn't benefit a lot from the more defensive play in Smash 4. :<

New Super Mario Bros. U is the best title in the NSMB series, but Nintendo seriously needs to drop the stale design of the NSMB series and the shitty BAH! BAH! music. The NSMB games basically look like what you'd make from a generic drag and drop platform game maker.

havent heard that before

never

New Super Mario Bros. U is the best title in the NSMB series,

I sometimes hear that (and a few crazies saying it's the best 2D Mario), but man, I couldn't be arsed to finish the game when I got it for free as part of the MK8 promo. The aesthetics are a drag, but so are the recycled level gimmicks. How many more "Dark cave levels with static light sources" and "auto-scrolling levels on the back of some large creature"-type levels do I have to endure?

The original NSMB is so *bleep*ing easy though, there's like no challenge in it at all.

At least the bosses are original and not just lol koopalings. Every NSMB is easy anyway and NSMB2 is so easy I could beat it in a day if I really wanted to.

you can beat all 2d mario games in a day or so

its not like the 2d platformers are long or anything

its short enough

its getting past the horrible level design that may prevent you from doing so on your first try
