I'm getting the game next week, so I should be able to get in a LOT of practice.
Very good, though it takes more than one month to become quite skilled, you can still get the basics of the game and get decent at a class.

The event is in about a month, as soon as everyone can come on at once, really, which is more likely to be during Christmas break where people are on vacation.

As for your first time playing the game, Soldier is a well-balanced class that has decent health, speed, and damage, so it can help teach you the basics of the game. Once you learn the basics of Soldier (and thus the game itself), you can experiment with classes and see what you like most. If I see you playing, I can help teach Soldier, since he is my best class and all.

also keep in mind that sniper or spy aren't very good classes for you if you lag and shit.

I've got a very good computer. It has only lagged when I try to use safari when Minecraft is on. Sniper seems a good class to also practice.

If you've ever played any other PC fps, let me warn you. Sniping in tf2 is much harder.
yeah especially since most of us stay in constant alert and movement.

I've honestly never played a PC FPS since I use a Mac.
I've also never played a Mac FPS.
TF2 is compatible with macs.
I know that.
BTW, should I use jarate or should I keep the sub machine gun?

I recommend Jarate. The SMG is rather weak, and the Jarate will deal mini-crits once applied. I also use the Bushwacka with the Jarate, because the Bushwacka deals crits when there's normally mini-crits, so it's perfect with Jarate. But I'm sure you don't have a Bushwacka just yet since you just got the game.

The only bad thing about jarate is if I'm attacked by a pyro then I can only try to snipe him at close range and I can't try to melee it since he could burn me to death easily.

hey look the bright side.

at least you can focus on easy targets.

althought you will need to worry about spies.

I doubt there's crits or minicrits.
'
Random crits are disabled. Any crits forced by a weapon is still valid, i.e. Kritzkrieg, Soda Popper, Manmelter, Jarate, etc. Competitive mode disables random crits in order to promote fairness and make the game more reliant on skill rather than luck.

Good to see someone really taking downsides into account for once instead of just using what isn't a non-default item. You can use Jarate to put out your fire, allowing you to run away, but if you feel very risky, you can use Jarate on him, then hit him with the Bushwacka to instantly kill him.

Why would you snipe him at close range? The Sniper Rifle is rather hard to use at close range. But what Groden said; if you do get ignited, make sure to Jarate towards the ground to extinguish your fire out and run away.

Ah yes, Snifit. Do realize Spies can disguise as anyone on your team and can backstab you while you're preoccupied sniping. I suggest wearing a Razorback if you feel risky sniping (which is quite a common item, you should be able to find it on a drop) because if a Spy attempts to backstab you while you're wearing a Razorback, it will break, and you will be zoomed out if you are sniping, so you'll be able to react.

Watch out for Pyros too. They can ignite you as you're sniping, making it difficult to react in time.

The Razorback is near useless, a Spy who even remotely knows what hes doing will pull out his gun and shoot you when you're occupied with sniping. Jarate is very good for detecting Spies, because if you know theres one around an area, you can splash him with it and trail him, even if he cloaks or uses Dead Ringer.

Also, a demoman's sticky grenades would be pretty helpful to keep enemies at bay. I wish that jarate on pyros extinguish their fire. :O

The only way the Razorback is a good item is if you're a Sniper that gets out in the middle of the fight- you'll be a risky target, so you'll be avoided until the rest of your team is taken out.

Besides that, though, it's a really shitty self-defense item because two to three shots at close range from a Spy's revolver (especially a headshot-bodyshot combo) and you're screwed before you can react.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Spies will tend to come to you because you're an easy target regardless.

I'm aware of that. I don't even use it that often. When I have used it though, I was backstabbed once or twice, but like you said, only Spies that remotely know what they're doing will pull out the gun.

Very true.

Sadly it doesn't work like that, and would be rather unfair to the Pyro.

don't forget it's even quicker to kill with the ambassador due to it being able to always crit when you headshot with it.
