Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Re: Mario Kart 8

I don't understand what memory has to do with racer speed

I could make racers in Mario Kart Wii drive like 200mph with gecko codes

They should use the extra memory to make the drivers go faster.
I don't think it works that way.

There are speed modifier codes in Mario Kart Wii, so they can just tinker with the engine speed to make vehicles go faster.

Sure, and while we're at it, let's add Captain Falcon and turn it into Mario Kart X F-Zero.
300cc ftw.

this would actually be really awesome.

I freaking love crossover games!

Nintendo Financial Meeting Jan 2014 happening right now, here's a tweet from one of the attendees which states that MK8 will be released in May.

woop woop

edit: this live blog confirms it as well

I'm following both of these for updates from the meeting, interesting stuff so far.

Re: Mario Kart 8

Argh that's about 4 months from now :P

So I have to wait until May for Wario to be announced for Smash?

Damnit.

Re: Mario Kart 8

Eh, I can live without updates for a few weeks.

Re: Mario Kart 8

FINALLY SOMETHING DYNAMIC AND DIFFERENT FROM JUST MARIO IN HIS KART WITH A WHITE BACKGROUND. PRAISE THE LORD, FOR HE EXISTS.

HELL YEAH!

Btw, what is Luigi driving on in the boxart? Is it the jet body?

No, I mean, detail spent on courses or even the Wii U version of .thp files

The .thp files tend to be huge memory hogs if they're quite long though. It should also be noted that trying to make everything in HD can also take a toll on the amount of space that the game disc can hold, which is usually why a lot of textures use the CMPR format, instead of the RGBA8 format.
Fun fact about data usage in MKWii: All kart-driver combinations are in separate files, and for most kart-driver combinations there are multiple versions for the splitscreen. This totals in 1528 files, together good for 174 MB. So no model for Birdo combined with a model of the Mach Bike with a specific texture, no, a whole file for the combination. Birdo's model is present 50 times on the disk, plus another 48 low-poly LOD-versions.

Looks neat.

Re: Mario Kart 8

^Don't forget that race tracks have a single player and a multi-player version, and the characters come with 3 different files: One for the player, one for player in splitscreen, and one for non-animated NPCs in splitscreen.

Oh, and the .brsar is pretty big, considering how much voices there are in the game.

Birdo and Mach Bike is a great combo.

Re: Mario Kart 8

Seriously though, who ever chooses Birdo with a purpose different from that of just fooling around?

Re: Mario Kart 8

I just used Birdo in my example because she was the first that jumped into my mind. I personally don't play as Birdo, nor use the Mach Bike (though I did texturehack the latter).

That's what I also said.

Nonetheless, MKWii is undeniably full of duplicate files. Even Item boxes and Goomba's are stored per-track. I hope MK8 uses their space wisely.

That's what seemed rather odd with Mario Kart Wii's contents. The game could've simply separated the character models from the vehicle models, though you do need to take into account the character model's animations during the process.

Since Mario Kart 8 will try to focus on HD graphics, separating the character models and vehicle models would help reduce how much memory gets used on the game disc.

Re: Mario Kart 8

Meh, I'm not complaining. The separate files allow me to race a giant Wario ass in multiplayer and a Wario nose for single player.

That's not the problem at all, just look at ./Scene/Model/Driver.szs and then at the ./Scene/Model/Kart folder. Those are used in the character selection screen and use only 28 MB in total, but they contain all characters, their karts (though the latter still separate per character) and the correct animations included in the kart files. Only thing not there is the low-polys.

Thought you didn't like Wario, why make (parts of) him bigger then?
