On the day of Luigi's and Sonic's reveals Olimar was featured in a fake out picture that came before their reveal. Here stands Olimar.
Next we have Sonic just standing there for no reason whatsoever. Why is standing there? What is his purpose? Notice how the ship is suspiciously out of its normal size.
Now, remember Snake's codec on Sonic in Brawl, about how something about Sonic rubbed him the wrong way? It's simple:

So... I guess this is a new item? I hear people saying it is. But it wasn't quite clear. For a moment I thought this was something added to Olimar's moveset or something.

Yeah I think that's overthinking it a bit. Screenshots aren't necessarily supposed to be taken as hints of other characters every time. Even if there's some that are kinda that way. Like the Pyrosphere reveal while it's debatable and we're still waiting for confirmation on what it means. There are optimists that suggest that Pyrosphere and even Sakurai's comments plus the fact Stage Hazard Ridley has not been shown are saying it hints to Ridley being playable. Or more obvious ones like a Fire Emblem Awakening Stage on the 3DS version meaning there will be a Fire Emblem newcomer.
A picture with Sonic, Olimar, and a new item on Pyrosphere having any connection to Solid Snake is grasping for straws.
It's like having a picture of Kirby using inhale on Pikachu. And having this as your guess

I find it strange that Nintendo isn't having Winged and Rock Pikmin being playable with the rest of the Pikmin, so I'm thinking that either they just haven't showed it yet, haven't incorporated it yet (as in the fact that they even say that these are all still in development so it's not completely finalized), Alph (or maybe even Brittany or Charlie) are playable, or they are just not going to be as a playable character with Olimar.

I don't think the Rock and Winged Pikmin will be in Smash 4 to be honest. It makes sense to put them in since Pikmin 3 came out, but I don't really want to get my hopes up for it.
