Even if Daisy makes it in as a proper alternate costume of Peach instead rather than a recolor, you'll find ways to bitch about Daisy not being exactly how you want.

Come on, that is a terrible way to introduce a new character. Literally nothing unique at all. Daisy is not a recoloured Peach.

The lack of content added to MK8 Deluxe has only strengthened my position that we won't get alot in the Smash port.

I will stand at 2 additional characters at most. A slight chance of 3 if we're lucky. The addition of Inklings to MK8 Deluxe does seem to point to them being quite likely as one of them. Still we have to wait and see what happens.

But there is the chance we get a cool additional mode. Either that be bringing over Smash Run capable of 4-player splitscreen, an adventure mode like Melee's, and/or an entirely new mode that we can only speculate what it could be.

I want Smash Run added to the Switch version. Smash Tour is simply not going to cut it.

A Splatoon-themed stage sounds like a lot of fun.

With Inkling looking like a strong possibility should the port add any newcomers, how about we discuss how they'd fight?

I always imagine of course that they'd be a ranged fighter. That's a bit on the slow side on normal ground. But can speed up their game by spraying ink all over the stage and going into squid form on the areas they spray to move around the stage at will. Other fighters who try to walk on the areas that the Inklings have sprayed will be slowed down, maybe even some chip damage which will force them to go aerial. Opening any moves where the Inkling attacks upward to get in some more damage.

It sounds like that'd be a bit OP if the Ink stays there indefinitely (A nice touch though would be Mario's FLUDD, Pac-Man's fire hydrant, Greninja's water attacks, etc. Water based attacks being the best weapon against the ink the Inklings create) but maybe they balance it by having that the ink gradually disappears after a while. So it forces the Inkling to decide when to keep spraying or actually attacking the opponent. The key to mastering the way the Inklings would be to find the best balance between keeping your ink over the stage and taking the fight to your foe. (Inklings would be at a massive disadvantage in a large stage under a gradually disappearing ink mechanic, but could be a pain to fight on small and flat stages)

In the case of Ditto matches with Inklings they're able to spray over eachother's ink. Pretty much making a 1v1 (Or 2 v 2 and any other kind of team combination in 8-Player. Though I wonder if they could even make it work where in teams your foe can still walk normal over your ink (Except in Team attack mode) or if you have fellow Inkling on your team they're able to travel on your ink too) at least somewhat reliant on exactly what it takes to win a Splatoon match with who has the most coverage of the stage throughout the match.

I also think that the Inklings in Squid form is when they'd be at their most vulnerable. You gain the speed when traveling through your own ink, but if a foe manages to hit you in Squid form. You get launched farther.

This is something that probably would of been impossible to program such a thing on the 3DS version but that's why that with enough ingenuity would be the perfect choice for a newcomer in the Smash Switch version since it won't have a portable version of the game fundamentally holding back the Wii U version.

Inklings are looking super likely for a hypothetical port. I see them and the Ice Climbers being added to take advantage of it being on the Switch.

I agree that Inklings are going to be likely additions, but Northern Verve's idea of how their mechanic revolving around ink work... that sounds really hard to pull off. Spraying ink all over the place to slow down opponents is already insane stage control a major aspect of competitive play, not in a good way. It'll have to be offset by a major disadvantage or a major limitation that might compromise on their character. I don't think they're going to be able to spray the stage with their ink with any additional effect besides aesthetics. Like maybe their roll dodges would be a quick animation of them turning into a squid while spraying ink beforehand while the ink lingers a bit after the animation is done. Same thing with their running animation; they may turn into a squid and leave behind ink traces, but it's all just aesthetic and the ink will disappear.

as i speculated on the previous page, id be also ok with just ice climbers and inklings but a rhythm heaven rep would be nice : (

And yeah no new racetracks in MK8D kind of puts a downer on the new content hype but i still stand by my suggestions on the previous page and if any of them become a reality id be happy

also with the inklings, i always pictured them as having a moveset that's built around using each type of splatoon weapon in some way, i.e. splat charger for side smashes, blaster for aerial, splattershot for regular weapon akin to mega man or something, etc, but in addition to being able to cover the stage with ink, as a suggestion for a caveat lgm brought up, they could have an ink meter that is depleted by the use of such moves and refills over time or twice as fast when hiding in said ink using the down special. Using certain attacks with no ink would make them much weaker. I dont think the ink that covers the stage should do much else except allow inklings to hide in it.

i agree that the ink mechanic would be tricky to implement but it would be cool to be able to hide in ink that you cover the ground with and get behind opponents while recharging specials. Having a splat roller for side special (i picture this working like bowser jr's side special) for fast turf coverage would be a great compliment to this.

for final smashes i really dont know what they could do but obviously it would involve the use of a special like inkstrike or inkzooka.

i'd like to think that if the port gave us customs for dlc characters then the inklings would have the first custom final smash. Shame customs are so shit

There was evidence that the Chorus Trio was slated to appear, but they were later cut. Maybe they'll be able to make a comeback?

(though honestly, why the chorus trio when there are plenty of actual fighters in the series)

karate joe would be great but we have ryu

Tibby is the closest thing the games have to a playable protag so It'd be cute if he got in but doubt it lol

For Inklings, there's always this problem of stage control though. Of course Inklings should excel in that if that's their specialty, but they can't be too broken. If Inklings can hide in their ink and just stay there, then again, that may lend to overly broken stage control. I like the idea of using this ink to refill the ink meter, which this ink meter is dependent on damage output. But I'm not sure if there is a good way to allow Inklings to hide in ink without making them broken in the stage control department. They're still vulnerable when they're hiding, right? Or they can hide for only a set period of time before jumping out and facing with some land lag that leaves them open, so players can't abuse hiding everywhere. In Splatoon, other Inklings can check that kind of ink power, but since Smash doesn't have that kind of environment, there has to be some different ways ink has to be handled.

The wandering samurai was actually my first thought. We don't have a proper samurai in the series yet (besides Takamaru the assist trophy), so I think he'd make a good addition.

I was hoping for Pink Gold Corrin, but that person is my favorite character from Fire Emblem. :P

But it's a katana, it's clearly different.

Inklings seem like a given at this point considering their MK appearance and I pray that Ice Climbers are back. The lack of new tracks in MK8 deluxe kind of dampened my expectations for this game.

I think taking a duck hunt approach to a Rhythm Heaven rep is the best course, imo. What I mean is incorporate a little bit of different parts of the series into one character, similar to duck hunt incorporating things like the Gunmen.

Now which character they use is a mystery. I see Chorus Kids thrown around a lot, but they really only appear in one minigame (Glee Club and its various versions, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a RH expert), so it seems weird to focus on them when there's other characters that appear in multiple minigames.

I think that, if the Inklings were to appear, the ink would only stay in place for something like five seconds at a time, and wouldn't slow the opponent. It would make the Inkling a fast-striking fighter, which is what you see in the games.

The problem with those "actual fighters" is that they're not good as representatives of the series. For example, someone like Rawk Hawk is much more suited for fighting than say Rosalina, but he's not iconic enough to represent the series. This is especially important for Rhythm Heaven since it would likely get one characters as a rep who would have to represent the series as best they can. I've been partial to Marshal as I feel he can represent the series as a whole a la Duck Hunt or even Mr. Game and Watch.

marshal is dead
tibby would be my top choice for a rhythm heaven rep since he's the MC of the story mode in the latest release and pretty much fills the marshal role as he has to face all of the minigames as trials in the story (though you never really have him in the minigames as you're the one playing them). Aside from marshal hes the closest thing the series now has to a mascot

tbh tho anyone would be great
even one of those shitty monkeys if this were the darkest timeline

After the recent Inkling amiibo news regarding Mario Kart 8 Deluxe...I'm done. I think I will be taking a very long break from Smash.
