United States Presidential Election, 2012

Uhh... Ireland was the first European country to be hit by the recession, and it's level of household debt is currently the second highest in the entire world. What I did know without having to skim through Wikipedia at the last minute, however, is that Ireland had to be bailed out by the European Central Bank when they were nearing bankruptcy in late 2010.

Really? I need to check my sources next time.... Anyway, disregard the section about Ireland then.

You're saying this as if a bunch of moronic pre-teens in early middle school actually knew about world politics.

Gingrich's win is good news for conservatives as far as economical policies go, so I suppose I'm happy with the results.

It's not the economic policies that bother me. I think that both conservatives and liberals have good ideas for economic policies and an intelligent debate would be wonderful.

It's the nastiness. It's the fanaticism. It's the flat-out lies to tear apart the opposition whether it's true or not. It's the desire to force everyone in America to conform to their view of Christianity. It's the hypocrisy of having a shitload of affairs and marriages, and then saying that he has the right to stop gays from getting married once. Barack Obama makes mistakes, but it's obvious that he's a good man. I don't think there's a decent bone in Gingrich's body.

I know that good economic policies technically trump the morality of a politician, but (speaking hypothetically, if Gingrich wins the presidency) if being a decent man gets you booted out of office and declared an anti-American communist from Kenya, and being an opportunistic jackass gets you the presidency over the aforementioned decent man, something is seriously wrong with the world.

Even our republicans are pretty liberal.

I don't need to listen to liberal propaganda to think those things- I just listen to five minutes of conservative propaganda! They seem pretty proud of most of this stuff, actually.

I do tend to focus less on morality (or at least what the public opinion of a candidate's morality is) when considering political candidates, but the thing about it is that Obama has several character flaws that worry me just as much as anything I've heard about Gingrich or Santorum. Why it is that every election year we wind up discussing what the media has unearthed on the strongest Republican candidate is beyond me. We're bordering on a moral discussion here now though, and that's somewhat off-topic.

Anyway, this pretty much sums up my opinion on Gingrich in terms of whether I think he should be elected or not.

It's because the Republican candidates tend to try to pass themselves off as flawless.

I am totally angry with Gingrich
[quote author=Newton "Newt" Gingrich at the Republican Debate]
"I can not imagine anything more despicable"

Says someone who wants "open" relationships, meaning he can have sex with other people, including 2 maidens and 1 wife with cancer. Really they just love his "sexy" "additude"

Um... like what?

I find it really difficult to side with the loudmouthed, nasty, adulterous hypocrite over the intelligent, well-spoken, decent human being.

At this moment, Obama is giving a speech that I don't think anyone in their right mind would oppose, it's on the TV next to me- he's talking about encouraging equal pay for men and women, helping teachers to educate students, and lowering taxes for small businesses. Meanwhile, Gingrich is preparing his next remarks, and if they're anything like his past remarks, they'll be tearing down Obama at all costs and accusing him of everything that he could possibly be (realistically or unrealistically) responsible for and calling for his (Gingrich's) religious beliefs to be instituted in the government.

Obama represents idealism and (admittedly unattainable) unity. Gingrich (and, sadly, the modern day Republican party) represents cynicism and the idea that the best way to win is go for the lowest blow.

Surely, surely, whatever Gingrich's supposedly brilliant economic ideas may be, there is someone else who can pull them off. So that America doesn't reward the lowest common denominator with the presidency.

You people may not give a fuck about morality, but I do.

What happened to the Party of Family Values?

Too tired to respond to your entire post but:

I can't find a single reason to not label this as purely an opinion. I could easily say that Obama is a weak, awful speaker as opposed to Gingrich's calm, straightforward and clever method, and that would be an opinion.

So is your "statement".

You know, I'd have a lot more respect for the GOP if it would stop focusing on what it perceives to be weaknesses in the current administration and among its own members (particularly the presidential candidates) and start focusing on its strengths, as in what its chosen/elected leader(s) can bring to the economy. Obama may not be getting as much done as most people would like, but it's a hell of a lot more than what the GOP has in the past and currently is.

So anyways...

I'd like to ask all the Republicans here who they would rather vote for: Romney or Gingrich.

Not asking Democrats because you all are going to vote for Obama. (Right?)

Exactly. They don't come off as THE GREAT HOPE FOR AMERICA, FAMILY VALUES, WOO!, they just come off as pricks.

Well saw-ry for trying to ask about the two frontrunners.

Also Colbert would be awesome as president.

Besides, I didn't ask about who was the absolute best, I just asked to compare the two frontrunners. Simple enough.

Between the two of them, Gingrich. Anyone left but Romney. I like Paul because he's not for pouring billions of dollars into Israel. I don't give a jack shit about Israel. Based on what I've read and seen, I would support Palestine.

Extremely left-wing borderline-socialist Democrat coming through, sorry.

Yes, which is why I'm against it.

It's great for small groups of people...like just about every form of government, actually.
