United States Presidential Election, 2012

EDIT: Sorry, wikipedia is blacked out today in protest tothe US Congress's proposed Internet bills.

Hilariously, they implemented this in javascript. So if you just turn that off you can still get to the articles.

I haven't paying too much attention, but I'd like Obama to get reelected. Gingrich looks horrible. Mitt Romney is ok and Rick Santorum looks good

My opinion of him aside, he's almost eighty. Not that his health is an issue, but this increases the chances of him dying in office before he even finishes his first term (assuming he even gets the presidency with Colbert appealing to the same voter base).

And Obama seems better? I must say that I really, really, really hope that he doesn't get reelected. My mom and dad are probably going to vote for Santorum.

Santorum's alright, but he never really struck me in the debates as someone who knew the field well. I prefer Gingrich's military views personally.

Santorum's way too pro-religion for me, but I'd rather have him than Ron Paul because Santorum will give funding to Israel.

Perry's like that for me. Israel I personally don't care about, but it's an ally, and we've got to keep up foreign relations, I suppose....

hey shut up, there's nothing wrong with being pro-religion. Santorum's problem is that he's pro-douchebaggery.

you're crazy if you'd rather vote for rick "gay marriage is equal to bestiality" santorum

Rick Perry is dropping out and endorsing Gingrich.

also, not sure if this was previously mentioned, but there was some reassessment or something of the votes for the Iowa caucuses, and it was revealed that Santorum beat Romney by somewhere around 30 votes.

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree here.

I thought Gingrich asking Santorum and Perry to drop out was going to make them more stubborn.

Fortunately Perry cares more about making Mitt lose in favor of conservatism than winning himself.

I honestly thought Perry would've stuck around until after the SC primaries (I also thought Huntsman would too)... he seemed to have done a good job at the debate a few days ago, and his showing at Mike Huckabee's forum in Charleston was generally considered one of the highlights of his campaign (Huckabee himself said it was Perry's best showing of his entire campaign). I would have thought he had some sort of momentum going with him, but all the momentum seems to be going to Gingrich.

I met Rick Santorum in the summer of 2006 in Pennsylvania at the Republican Clam Bake. There was so much rare pork and every kind of rare beef and fried food you could imagine in your wildest dreams for a glutton. I was partially wasted on all the beer they had it in cups all over the place, even though a minor they didn't know or care. For all they knew I was drinking punch, all the cups looked the same. It was also 100 degrees outside. After eating so much of the delicious undercooked pig I had to take a huge shit so I went into an outhouse. When I got out there was Santorum ten feet away drinking something (not beer we can be sure he doesn't smoke/drink) so I walked up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. "Excuse me, senator?" And he replied, "Um, yes?" I shook his hand. He attempted to inconspicuously wave his hand over his nose because I just had shit and smelled something awful. But I knew what he was doing. I'll bet he was wondering "Who's this smelly fat kid?". So I posed next to him for a picture that my brother took. He looked like a stick figure next to me. But not w/o that nervous, uncomfortable looking smile on his face.

Santorum was blasting away last night during the debate, it was more likely for him to be attacking someone else than to be explining his beliefs.

It seems to me that he's pursuing an ideal of being the "negative-Obama" in that he wants a clear contrast between himself and Obama.

It feeds well on the Republican idea that Obama is inherently evil, but I don't buy in to that philosophy, so it seems that acting that way would just be another step away from bipartisanship, which is currently one of the only ways to get things done in this country.

Ron Paul also pushed his ideas and his ideal of the country looked to me like an isolationist state. Which would mean no support for China (good) and no support for Israel (bad).

I believe that non-intervention can lead to isolation. If the US was to stop helping other nations, those nations would stop helping the US in return, which can then lead to isolationism.

But it's ok. Isolation works so well for North Korea!

You are so weird.

Also
New Gingrich won SC by 13%. He accumulated 40% of the vote.

This means that no candidate can say that they are more electable because of primaries.

I told you not to look.

Also I heard someone else today say that they'd lost faith in humanity because of Gingrich's win...

It's a callback to four years ago when my friends were talking about moving to Canada if Obama got elected.

...but isn't Canada further to the left than the United States? Why would you go there to escape a liberal politician?

For those sorts of people, as long as they're getting away from the liberalism of a U.S. politician, I don't think they care too much (to them, anything is better than what they have now).

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

No need to say that unless he wins in November (which I don't think will happen at this point).

If I were to move to another country because of political problems in the USA, it'd probably be Ireland or Finland. Ireland has one of the lowest corporate income tax rates in the world (and a good economy), and Finland has an amazing educational system.

Anyway, given what conservative talk show hosts like Boortz and Hannity are saying, Gingrich's win is good news for conservatives as far as economical policies go, so I suppose I'm happy with the results.
