Brawl Mod: Project M (Doesn't require hacking your Wii/Wii U!)

I went and did some searching for an easy to use guide to installing it. Turns out, I have a 320GB drive hanging around that I could use. hah, woops. Well, I doubt it will work because I've probably fucked something up already and don't know about it.

Worth a shot I guess.

I thought this was amazing, so I'm just going to put this here. Mew2King (Fox, Marth) vs Armada (Pit)
So goooood. Armada is like, my favourite Smasher.
I was rooting for M2K, but I must admit that the Swedish Sniper is really damn good.

'Rooting,' you say?

So I've got USB Loader and the ISO, I'm getting Wii back up manager so I can put it on the usb drive. There are still some unclear spots (Like where do I put the game on the usb, I'll just put it in different spots until it works. Or someone could tell me *hint*) because all the more detailed instructions are specifically for NTSC and just sort of brush off PAL and tell us to figure it out ourselves.

"In America it means cheering, in Australia it means fucking." that's just off urban dictionary.

Yes, I was cheering for M2K as well. He has been really good lately but he always comes up a little bit short at the big tournaments. Runner-up in both Project M & Melee.

Not literally "cheering", more like supporting.

Oh shit. I meant cheering by the way.

So I did all the crap to try and get Project M working but USB Loader won't even read my hard drive. The list said it would be compatible but maybe it's formatted wrong, I have to get it to FAT32 through command prompt. If this doesn't work then I give up and accept that I wasted 6 hours of messing around to get it to work. Great

You can format it to FAT32 though My Computer.

Lol, I know, mate, it just amuses me. :P

Though the 'stralyan term for it would be 'barrack.'

This. Basically go to My Computer, Right-click and format. There will be an option for FAT32. Just make sure to backup any files already on it because it will wipe the drive.

I have exFAT instead. Not sure if there's much of a difference. Well, I got it to read through the USB Port, now I just need to get the games working. Not sure what file to use so I just slapped the .wbfs, .wbf1 and .iso files of NTSC Brawl I have on there and I'll see how it goes.

yeah that should be enough.

So, I have the NTSC version of Brawl working now. I have the files I got from Project M on my SD Card but I'm unsure how to access them.

If you want to view and change any files, download Brawlbox. You can use it for brstms (SSBB music files), and for item textures/model swaps.

Go into Brawl --> Stage Builder and it should load Project M. Just remenber that if you have any stages downloaded into it, you have to delete them first.

I'm trying but nothing seems to happen. According to almost all the guides, it should start up automatically when I enter it from the USB Loader menu. I feel like I've missed something so small that I have no chance of finding out why it won't work.

Ugh, I've asked for help on smash boards and the project m subreddit but I don't really expect a response that works. Even when I re-read all the guides I can't see anything that I haven't done.

EDIT: Well, the project m I downloaded stuffed up somehow, I redownloaded it and now it's working. It's awesome. Mewtwo is really fun. Also, since I've never wavedashed in my life, or even l-canceled, I keep forgetting about it and never do it. It's not like I really must have it but it'd be nice to learn how to.

Best way to learn those techs is just to spend an hour or two at training mode.

Or actually face easy CPUs while you attempt to learn it

Why doesn't Project M just reduce the frames of ending lag rather than have make you have to L-cancel like in Melee?

And no, the best way to tech is to face against CPUs and maybe do it in a higher damage ratio so you'll have more opportunities to tech.

I tech and l-cancel on a regular basis. :P

If any of you guys are disappointed that Waluigi is once again an Assist Trophy in Smash 4. There's an upcoming mod coming up that is a fanmade complete Waluigi PSA.

There is a catch however. It requires replacing Pit. But if you really like Waluigi, and don't care enough about Pit. You may be able to enjoy doing stuff like this video

The person behind the mod keeps a Tumblr blog as well. Where you might be able to ask a few questions and/or check up on the progress. He doesn't have a solid release date for it yet. Though he said he's going to try to have it by the end of the month or mid-next month

It is legitimate as in they put it in because they wanted it to be a game mechanic. Wavedashing was noticed during development but not really cared about so it was left there. L-cancelling was intended to be there by the developers. I don't know why they added it but they did, that's how it is and it's a large part of competitive melee. Basically, Project M was made by competitive melee fans for competitive melee fans. L-cancelling is a large part of melee, remove it and you remove a large part of the game mechanics you are trying to replicate. That is counter-productive to what they wanted to create.

So what? Making L-canceling automatic won't destroy the competitive base nor won't it heavily alter gameplay. And no, they're not trying to replicate Melee exactly. They're taking the best from both Smash 64 and Melee while even tweaking mechanics to make it even better than the two. Nevertheless they're trying to introduce totally unnecessary mechanics to make it "more competitive", or they're removing more helpful mechanics. L-canceling just adds an additional layer of complexity that newer fighters may not notice, so I'm not digging it.

I think I saw something on the smashbros reddit today by M2K explaining to a lot of people that Fox/Falco are not the best, they just have the most experience and knowledge behind them because they are made to be incredibly similar to their Melee versions while other characters do not have this kind of advantage for now. A character with 12 years of knowledge you can find and learn compared to one with a year at most will have a difference in their ability. Falco is a lot like he was in Melee, a fox clone. Project M is intended to be very similar to Melee on purpose, because that is exactly its purpose. The game draws in melee players because it caters to them and they'd be pissed if their favourite character was changed because he was called a 'clone' when the characters have their differences, no matter how large or small they may be.

Reverting Falco to a Fox clone isn't the right way to go. The modders should've just built on Falco's moveset to make it like what-if-this-Falco-was-in-Melee rather than being all uptight and "competitive". Project M is supposed to be very similar to Melee, yes, but Melee is a far-from perfect game as well. The modders have significantly buffed Kirby, making his stone attack behave much more differently, and his Hammer attack behaves as in Brawl. Mario is a mixture of himself and Dr. Mario, although Mario's down-b behaves differently than in Melee. Mr. Game & Watch may have gotten an overall nerf.

Dumbed down stages rely heavily on skill rather than luck, so of course their going to add more. I mean, it was made to be competitive (there's that word again, I wonder why I use it so much?) on purpose.

Not even Melee has this much bland stages, Battlefield clones. They may be more "skill-based", but it can't do anything to deter my disgust for those stages. Green Hill Zone, Spear Pillar, 75m, Mario Bros., Rumble Falls, and Hanenbow are bad stages, though, so I don't care if they get turned into Battlefield with a skin. They should've toned down the stage hazards, because it was the strength of those things that are ridiculous. Remember, Melee has both a competitive and casual appeal, giving it overall broad appeal. I'm probably a step above casual players, but I'm not a competitive player either.

Crackin355 said:
tl;dr: Project M is a more balanced Melee with more content with competitive melee as its focus. It was made to be competitive and so it has a lot of elements and additions to further that intention. 'that's stupid' is just your opinion anyway
Adding L-canceling does not make it more competitive. Neither does removing buffering. Balancing characters is competitive. So is removing tripping. Reverting Luigified characters to their clones isn't competitive. It just means people can't adapt to their mains.

What's also contributing to my beef is how the mod prides itself to be the "proper" sequel to Melee. ... I know Brawl has a bad competitive base (and Mario sucks in that game), but don't outright diss it or its players like that. Some people behind the mod also have a poisonous attitude. Call it irrational, but it doesn't help with my view on the game. I do appreciate the heavy amount of effort it takes in the game; it's amazing; it's not the god mod, though. Not by far.

I think the reason l canceling still exists is because some people play both Melee and PM. If you removed l canceling, some people may forget to do so and when they go back to Melee, they'll be rusty.

Also, Falco remains a Fox clone because that's what Falco mains remember. If you change him, you turn off people who have been playing Falco for 12 years.

I don't think arguing is going to get us to a conclusion we can both agree on. I'm perfectly fine with mods deciding to make it more like competitive melee and you're not. I don't think that will change because we're both stubborn.
