The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Well there is this: http://whatculture.com/gaming/5-reasons-why-skyward-sword-sucks.php

Of course, I disagree with a lot of the things they say.

The strongest and most universally valid point there is the repetition IMO, the rest is pretty subjective.

Probably the motion controls.

If there's some sort of control gimmick, I find that it usually works best when it's just there to enhance the gameplay without eclipsing classic button and stick controls. Super Mario Galaxy is a good example. The game makes some good use of Wiimote technology with the whole pointing at starbits thing, but you still play the actual game normally.

Button control takes advantage of the amazing ability of the human mind to view an abstract tool as an extension of the body. After a while you stop noticing that you're holding a gamepad or whatever, and you become completely immersed in the control scheme. Your brain thinks "Jump!", instead of "I need to press the A button to jump".

Technology has not yet advanced enough however to achieve the same effect with motion control swordplay. You don't get the same feedback from your wiimote that you get while holding a real sword. If you hit something with a sword, you will feel the recoil. The wiimote obviously cannot replicate that effect. Your mind picks up on the dissonance between what's happening on screen and what's happening in your hand, and that dissonance will make it feel fake.

I guess it is comparable to the uncanny valley effect, except here it's more of a fakeness valley. Button controls are abstract enough that we don't need to actively compare them to what's happening on screen. However, the closer we get to replicating the motion on screen with the movements we do ourselves, and the more "realistic" this becomes, the more we feel inclined to compare, and the more fake it starts to feel.

One day, when technology has advanced so far that holding and swinging a controller feels exactly like using a sword, these issues will disappear and there will be truly immersive motion controls.

But we aren't there yet, so motion controls still suck.

I agree with you, but I did like how easy it was to travel when it is like that. Very different from TP, where it sometimes took me thirty minutes to an hour to get to my destination sometimes. Also, every time you go to a new location, you go somewhere completely different.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

yeah. skyward sword had a lot of repetition but it always was showing you new areas

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

Skyward Sword was my favorite Zelda hands down.

And I thought the motion controls worked great. They felt really good.

AND THAT ARTICLE IS SO WRONG. I loved the story.

*explanation on immersion*
Well said.

Immersion with button pressing is something a lot of people don't understand. It's most obvious to me when I suddenly switch from, say, TF2 to Republic Commando. Suddenly I try to instinctively switch weapons and it's not working! Oh wait, that's because Q does something different now. It's even more annoying when I try to spin up my minigun and throw a grenade instead. Whoops.

Someone needs to make a universal language for FPS, so I won't have this problem every time I switch games. : /

Already a lot of people are complaining because it seems that Link will be Right-handed in this game.

But again, there'll always be fans complaining.
yeah, he's using his bow right-handedly, so that probably means motion controls are back. they didn't mention that in gameexplain
Oh well then I wont be buying this and it makes me sad inside

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

Why would they implement motion controls if the main ways of playing are going to be the GamePad and Pro Controller?

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

I can see the gamepad being a map for the world, since it's apparently supposed to be huge.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

Haven't they already made some sort of archery minigames on the Wii U? I figured they would probably do archery the same way here.

...

Not that that's a good way to do archery, but...

I hope the GamePad works like the touch screen in OoT3D and WWHD. Being able to adjust your gear and weapons on the fly is really nice. As opposed to having to pause and pull up a menu screen.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

Bitches talking like Wind Waker and Skyward Sword were bad

You know, for someone who hates cartoon graphics so much, I have to wonder why your avatar is Develon. Shouldn't Bubble Bobble's cutesy art style pretty much be the death of you?

*sigh* It's more complicated than that. I don't want to partake in this argument anymore T__T

Then please don't post here at all. This thread can do without the type of people who post their opinion only to not explain yourself to any counter arguments because 'I don't want to partake' in it. Don't reply if you don't want to include yourself or better yet don't post in the first place, you're both contradicting yourself and being a pest.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

To change the subject, how would you guys feel about voice acting?

As long as Link himself does not speak, I would love to have full voice acting. It would really help with immersion in this open world they're creating.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

I highly doubt they'll put voice acting in this game. They haven't put it in Hyrule Warriors, I don't think it will happen here.

I wouldn't mind it if it had voice acting....but please don't make it Sunshine bad. Thank you.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

That's what I hope IF Zelda ever gets voice acting.

Re: Zelda (Wii U)

Samus talking really wasn't the main problem of the Other M though but I do understand your point.

Just make Link a screaming guy who just grunts and stuff instead of talking.
