The Official E3 2014 Thread

Well, Zelda and Ganondorf are very major characters in a very popular series. That's probably what exempts them from that logic.

Ridley fits this description as well.

He's too big Which is why he's at least almost definitely a boss in SSB4, which is a fairly major role and a step up from an Assist Trophy.

He was not an Assist Trophy in Brawl. He was a boss in that game too.

Honestly, I would love to see Ridley playable, but I won't lose my mind if he doesn't make it like I will if Mewtwo doesn't make it.

Yes, though I was only really referring to the most recent example of his acknowledged importance and never said he was an Assist Trophy in the first place, I just said that being a boss in a stage is more important role than being an Assist Trophy.

But Lucas is a clone of Ness, and he only appeared in one Japan-Only game. (Outside of Smash.)

Appearing in Japan-only games means absolutely nothing, Marth and Roy were from a Japan-only series.

Wrong sir. They are semi-clones.
Lucas' standard attacks are unique with the exception of his down tilt, forward smash, and up aerial (while they have some alteration to their animation, they are identical in function to Ness'). Their special moves however, are very similar in name and appearance, while having similar mechanics but differing functioning. PK Freeze freezes opponents instead of being a very powerful vertical KO move like PK Flash. Lucas' PK Fire differs to the point where it can be argued to not be cloned, as it's a single hit projectile that knocks opponents away, while Ness' hits multiple times and traps opponents (additionally, Lucas' fires his PK Fire with a different animation, and Ness can fire his down diagonally in the air). Lucas' PK Thunder can go through opponents while Ness' doesn't, and his PK Thunder 2 is a multi-hitting move, while Ness' hits once. However, while the similarity in their moveset can be argued to not be quite enough to label them as semi-clones, they have very similar physics, with them having identical size, shape, weight, and falling speed. They additionally both suffer from 10 additional frames of lag when being grab released that no other characters in Brawl suffer from.
It's even debatable if Lucas and Ness are semi-clones at all. It's a gray area and both sides have convincing arguments.
