Look at it! Look at it! LOOK AT IT!

Partners in Time was a major upgrade in terms of sprite work, especially for Bowser.

In the Japanese version, they actually changed the sprites so that he didn't look like some sorta deformed frog.

I don't think I've seen the Japanese version.

Welp

still too small for my tastes

I love how the bracelets are just part of the skin.

People should complain, because it's still extremely hideous and it's fun to remark how hideous they are. People post lod models in this thread, and while they do functionally have a purpose, doesn't stop them from being a bit trainwreck representation of the character.

Also, btw, in comparison, Mario Party DS and Super Mario 64 DS have far better 3D models of Bowser than Mario Kart DS.

Meh I have seen better models on the N64.

Yeah and the former has like that camera game, and as such, they are intended to be seen from close-up from the front. Unlike MKDS. Context matters.

I got two words for ya: Yoshi bike

Although it ain't as creepy as this...

Yoshi's endless vanity as he has a boat, roller coaster, helicopter, and even an entire racetrack in his liking.

I don't agree because another example racing game, Diddy Kong Racing DS, as bad as that game is, still has far better character models than Mario Kart DS. It probably has nothing to do with what you're saying and almost entirely about preserving framerate, because I think DKRDS ran at 30 while MKDS ran at 60.

mario kart games all had hideous models compared to other games of their console up until mk8

Their models aren't as jarringly hideous, but they're still considerably lower quality than their competitors.

Besides, map design is what the devs focus on mostly rather than character models. In terms of environment, Mario Kart Wii was okay for a Wii game.
