It's so much easier to assume they're the same character, it really is, and Mario's weird appearance is just some depiction error.

I know, but sometimes it's fun to run with oddball fan theories until you inevitably hit a brick wall, and then try to find a way to climb it.
 
Maybe Mario's weird depiction on the art is just an artist's version of the game where they try to idealize Mario into another physical form he's not, like how ancient art idealizes people to look something they're not.
 
It's hard to teach history that features death and violence when Nintendo doesn't want death and violence anywhere near its proprietary titles. What the PC release calls a "bloody massacre" is a "British attack" in the SNES release. Also, Gandhi wasn't "assassinated," he was "mortally wounded," (though it keeps the part about him threatening to fast himself to death), and Joan of Arc wasn't "burned at the stake," she was "martyred," and Mary, Queen of Scots, wasn't "beheaded," she was merely "done away with." How delightfully informative.
 
Strange to think that way when kids like violence in their books they read. I remember as a kid, when I found out the actual, darker, more violent stories in the Grimm Fairy Tales, I kinda smirked at that. Roald Dahl also has a lot of violence, and I enjoy it a lot too.
