Welcome, [new user's name], to the Super Mario Boards! We hope you come to enjoy yourself in the committee and stay for a while. How about checking out some of these?
*Read our Rules & Regulations.
*Introduce yourself to the community.
*Discuss ways to improve the Super Mario Wiki.

We hope you have a great time at the Super Mario Boards.

IMO, these are the only points new users need to see if this sort of thing is implemented. Anything else they can find and/or participate in on their own time.

I agree with just having these four points and absolutely none else.

Why do I feel like new users will STILL ignore the message if they joined?

Because that's what happens on the wiki most of the time?

If we could, we could maybe force them to the PM box when they create their account?

If we can't, this is the only real flaw in the suggestion.

I don't think it's a flaw at all. Back when we had the automated welcome on the wiki, after creating an account one was directed to the main page, with a bright yellow "you have new messages" notice at the top. This notice won't go away unless the user viewed their talk page. On the forums, a new pm would be indicated both in the top right corner, and with a [1] next to "my messages" at the top. Though not as obvious as the wiki, the indication of a message is still there, and users are more than likely to view a new message. So I don't think new users are likely ignore it. They may very well disregard it, but that is something different.

we could threaten them a bit, you know, "hey, look at these links, or you'll be banned and we'll tie you up and chuck you into the ocean for not knowing what to do" or something along those lines.

That's neither realistic nor constructive to this discussion :P

If this is done I'd say get a bot to do it if at all possible, that way new users will get the message faster.

Bot because it's automatic and not everyone is here all the time, unlike a bot.

Do you think it's a good idea for the ban log to include examples of the posts the user did? Of course, if it's about posting inappropriate words or images, you shouldn't do it, but I think it's a good idea to show examples of flamey posts the banned users have done.

That sounds too much like giving them some degree of notoriety, in my opinion.

Well, I think it should be applied to the perma-banned users.

that's still giving them notoriety, and also establishes a troll hierarchy that only serves to glorify their actions further

"Troll Hierachy" I like that, I might use that sometime.

It would be pretty useless, and plus you could just circle through the user's log to see what he did wrong. Normally, if they post something bad, the mods will just edit it out of their post.

I would to suggest that we sticky threads for all major upcoming Mario games and recently released games in the Marioverse board.

Agree or Disagree? Besides Pokemon X & Y is sticked.

The Marioboards doesn't need a rogues gallery. If someone is that curious, they can check the user's "show posts" anyway.

It's not like they can search the user by conventional means, though. Once a person is banned, they no longer show up on the Members list.
