Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Re: Mario Kart 8

I doubt the extra voices was all that much either, probably just took a slightly longer recording session.

They need unique shaders and their texture files are different. They have a different set of key frame animations and their voice actors need to supply new voices, which also need a filter to complete the effect.

The only thing that takes remotely any shred of real effort is the key framed animations and new voice acting but the rest aren't hard to incorporate. Especially your whole shaders argument, I'm sure it's the game engine that renders the shaders not the characters themselves. And really, texture files different? It's basically a recolor job.
I'm sure it's the engine that renders the shader as well, but it still requires a custom shader nevertheless. The UV mapping is the same and all, and, while I don't know what the actual texture looks like, it isn't something you can just recolor in mere minutes in Photoshop.

I don't think any given character took exceedingly long to create, render, UV map, etc. since most already have the base models AND voices from the previous console generations to work from. The only thing that's new is maybe the quality of the models, the animations, and the voices, but yeah, effort at this point isn't really a valid argument to make when it comes to creating Metals. Now, Metals probably took less effort, but they aren't half-minute recolor jobs.

Metal Mario has 80 original voice clips, only a few recycled from Mario Kart 7 (and Mario has 79, with quite a few recycled, actually). I don't think Charles Martinet makes just a few grunts and moves out of here.

I'm pretty sure Metal Mario's texture is nothing much more than a featureless-shade of gray. Seriously, no eyelids, no pattern, nothing, aside maybe from that mark on his hat and some overall lines. He's essentially a 3D model that hasn't gotten any textures on it yet. That's absolutely nothing compared to actually UV mapping a character from scratch. So in fact, it's even EASIER to recolor Metal Mario in a program, since all you probably need is MS PAINT to make his texture.

Metal Mario MIGHT have some details on his texture to emulate the cavities on his body though, like his ears, the bumps on his mustache, the corners of his mouth, and the soles of his shoes.

Re: Mario Kart 8

That's why I kinda revised my post after seeing that he does still have an "M" on his hat though my point still stands.

How does it still stand? His textures likely aren't featureless just as how Mario's skin, overalls, and shirt textures actually have features on them. You probably have darker spots like where his sideburns are supposed to be.

The only thing that takes literally (and I mean literally) no effort for our favorite oversized tin can is the UV mapping.

You said it's not something you can recolor in minutes in Photoshop, when that's exactly what it is.

Once the game running has a shader that you want to use, you can simply program to use and manipulate shaders to get desired effect.

PGP and Metal Mario were quick easy jobs, if they weren't in the game nothing would replace them, they'd just be empty spots.

That would have been way better, honestly...

Why? I get not liking metal characters (you racist) but in what way is less characters better?

They could have worked well as alternate costumes, like the ones Yoshi and Shy Guy have. Having them as separate characters is just stupid in my opinion. Yes, yes, I know they have different voices and different stats and all, but all that could have easily been ignored. For example, all the Yoshis have different stats in Mario Super Sluggers, yet in Mario Kart 8 they're all the same, as it should be.

less stamps to collect, for starters

Re: Mario Kart 8

You're talking to the type of person who is obligated to collect things in games

Changing a Yoshi's color won't make it weigh heavier. Being made out of metal would. No, it couldn't be ignored. You're telling me metal can just magically weigh the same as flesh and bone? bullshit

Anyone who salutes, says "Mia Mama", "Papa" instead of "Mama", or "Bravissimo", and is just an overall badass deserves a slot in my books.

No wonder you disliked Galaxy 2

I think Mario's are kinda boring. Same thing with his voice, it sounds really high pitched to me.

Like Baby Luigi's voice

idk why my twin and my favorite characters look like they inhaled helium

Yeah, Mario's just a bunch of fists and showing off the legs and helium whoopees. Even in Mario Kart 7, Metal Mario had a more interesting stunt and a more Marioish voice.

It did feel like arbitrary extension of the game. I gave up on collecting them after a while.
