I never....played...Melee....
Fix....that...NOW....

Not everyone has a GameCube or an older Wii to play Melee though.

Damm, I just realized that the Wii has stopped production, so you can't get the full experience if you don't have a Wii or Gamecube. Here's hoping that Melee will be put on Virtual Console, though.

It has to be an older Wii though, as the newer Wiis do not have GameCube compatibility.

That's messed up, just like lack of backwards compatibility.

Too bad items aren't reworked... yet.

Real men use items.

Cool Steel Diver item

I disagree

Nothing can be funner than setting off 4 smart bombs and two blast boxes on Wario.

I always use items.

Oh, you're one of those people. All about the "raw" power. The basic "likes go fist to fist" and drop all weapons.

But you know how boring that gets? I always get annoyed when people are like "no items, no stages with gimmicks, not anything!" And it's such a BORING battle because nothing is happening other than trying to hit the other, and some of the people I play with uses cheap hits to get where they want, and just spam attacks.

Now, it's great to test your raw power here and there, but obviously that just means you're good with raw power. What about the other 80% of the game? A good fighter is one that can adapt to their settings and use the surroundings to their advantages. Use stages like Mushroomy Kingdom to try to get your opponent too far too the left so that you can knock him out easier than normal. Or with the Pikmin stage, get enemies to land on the Bulborb to try to get them to be eaten, or us the water on the side to send them down and then launch a great attack as they are recovering. Very skilled if you asked me than just back-and-forth slapping.

Plus, items are another thing. They add variety to battling, and again, being able to use what you got helps. If you say "omg, thiz vry cheap!" then obviously just are complaining that the items are being used against you, and so you just blame them. There is a luck factor with items, and where they land, and what comes out of it, but being able to adapt to it and try to use it in your favor shows how well of a fighter you are as well. Heck, maybe even show that you are skilled greater than your raw abilities. Thinking on the spot is a wise skill to have, and even in real life, if you were ever in a fight, you're not going to be in a place that is basically flat and empty, and you're not going to have the skills of a fighter like in SSB. You use what you can to try to win, even using the objects are you, or the environment.

Plus, people are on different levels, so using items gives them the ability to try to make up ground with their opponent, and ensure that there isn't a clear winner. And besides, don't people "want" that challenge? They say that "raw" power fighting tests your skills, but they see items and they think "oh, so cheap." when they have to battle in one of them. Not trying to classify all "raw" demanding players this, but usually they have a top-skilled player like Meta Knight so that they can just sweep their opponents because they memorize specific timings to hit their enemies, usually trying to get them in the air so that they can get the upper hand and attack from below. Basically to just ensure that they win, and - not saying it about anyone here - complain about the items because they could lose (gasp, I know, so terrible to lose).

So yeah, I love the items, and they make for battling a lot more fun and interesting. It might not be so "competitive" as some people put it, but at least there is still a lot of difficulty and challenge to face with them.

*Yes, this is my opinion. You can disagree/agree with it all you want, but I'm not trying to make it sound like this is gospel or anything.*

Well, isn't it pretty obvious that people have different preferences? A wall of text isn't quite necessary to convey this. I hope I don't need to explain why people that play competitively and in tournaments don't like items, it sort of speaks for itself.

people are just too damn serious most of the time and overreact if they think their form of play isnt good enough.

I like items and i also play competitively, but i grew up on fighting games so lol.

Quite frankly though, people need to relax and look at both sides before anything.

I love items.

They add so much more spice to the game.

And in my honest opinion, it's your fault you can't use an item correctly or you can use it good. So it's still competitive.

OBJECTION!

(Adding on to what BMB said)

Who's to say Smash is only great because of "no items"? Sakurai himself said the point of Smash is "to not feel remorse for yourself for losing, but rather, praise your opponent for winning" (or something along those lines).

If you prefer having items, have them on! If you prefer not, then that's fine too. But to say they're no fun is an over statement and a bold one.

And for the record I do play competitively, though I simply don't mind items from time to time.

Also, I guess playing against characters like Peach, Snake, Diddy, (Toon) Link or Zero Suit Samus are not fun because they can produce items then... Peach has turnips (or even a rare chance of getting a Beam Sword/Bob-Omb/Mr. Saturn lol), Snake has grenades, (Toon) Link has bombs, Diddy has banana peels, and ZSS has her armor pieces. There's still skill involved here with having smart usage with items.

And yet playing against ZSS is one of my favorite Match-ups, mainly cause of armor pieces. :p

you do realize that items are not fun to him, right?

I dont get why people are reacting this way, sheesh.

(btw a lot of items are a bit too powerful in brawl, the balance of items was much better in melee imo).
