Items are no fun. It takes a lot of the skill that makes smash great out.
(Adding on to what BMB said)
Who's to say Smash is only great because of "no items"? Sakurai himself said the point of Smash is "to not feel remorse for yourself for losing, but rather, praise your opponent for winning" (or something along those lines).
If you prefer having items, have them on! If you prefer not, then that's fine too. But to say they're no fun is an over statement and a bold one.
And for the record I do play competitively, though I simply don't mind items from time to time.
Also, I guess playing against characters like Peach, Snake, Diddy, (Toon) Link or Zero Suit Samus are not fun because they can produce items then... Peach has turnips (or even a rare chance of getting a Beam Sword/Bob-Omb/Mr. Saturn lol), Snake has grenades, (Toon) Link has bombs, Diddy has banana peels, and ZSS has her armor pieces. There's still skill involved here with having smart usage with items.
And yet playing against ZSS is one of my favorite Match-ups, mainly cause of armor pieces. :p

To me it's more fun if you skillfully beat your opponent, not with the help of luck.Dr. Javelin said:...I personally consider [playing without items] more fun because I enjoy learning games. Learning them, getting better at them, mastering them - what's fun to me in games is honing a master technique and then getting to practice it out on your unwitting friends.
Random item drops totally destroy this for me because basically one side or the other can randomly get an advantage of an item. Even if you turn off "broken" items like Smash Balls, Starmans, etc. you still have a major problem when one side gets a Green Shell or something, lobs it for a KO. Totally upsets the balance of the game and makes it way less fun for me.
But I mean, if you enjoy randomness and it's more about messing around than skill, then that's perfectly fine. I just don't like to play that way personally.

Never mind that Mega Man has been a predominately Nintendo-centric series throughout most of its existence, he also predates Kirby by around 5 or so years. And "stealing" moves is kind of his M.O. Also, Sonic is only popular because of his rivalry with Mario. It surely isn't because (most of) his games are good.
