i'm 50-50 with the item thing, sometimes i'll use them and sometimes i won't

though gimmicky stages are the best imo

It might be possible we're getting Smash 4 earlier then we expect. There's this German article here with the possible news, in an interview from a German General Manager that works for Nintendo. And I don't know how many users here known German (Besides Edo, who I believe lives in Germany). But the most important part has been translated already and confirmed to be a reliable translation.

In German: Für nächstes Frühjahr sind außerdem mit Mario Kart 8 und Super Smash Bros. zwei weitere große Lizenzspiele für unsere TV-Konsole angekündigt.

Translation: For next spring two more big license games are also announced for our TV console with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.

It seems odd they'd release both big games relatively this soon next to eachother. But dang, Smash 4 in Spring? That sounds almost too good and/or soon to be true. You would think they'd at least save Smash 4 for sometime after E3 so they can show off a big trailer to hype up the game. Only time will tell though if this is true. But a rumor coming out of the mouth of an employee is more plausible then a guess from 4Chan, GameFAQs, or anyone who says they have a friend or relative that works for Nintendo and knows something about it.

SM accidentally put a quote from the post in the Smashboards thread that linked to this in url tags. Here's the article.

Yeah he basically says SSB in spring 2014.

In the rest of the interview he just talks about how the Wii U isn't selling as bad as everyone says and how Nintendo has no intentions to develop Smartphone games atm.

I hope they don't release this in the Spring.

There's no way I can possibly afford this

i dont care, feb is bravely default, and im sure i can get some money for ssb4 yaaaaaay

No.

Items are no fun. It takes a lot of the skill that makes smash great out.
OBJECTION!

(Adding on to what BMB said)

Who's to say Smash is only great because of "no items"? Sakurai himself said the point of Smash is "to not feel remorse for yourself for losing, but rather, praise your opponent for winning" (or something along those lines).

If you prefer having items, have them on! If you prefer not, then that's fine too. But to say they're no fun is an over statement and a bold one.

And for the record I do play competitively, though I simply don't mind items from time to time.

Also, I guess playing against characters like Peach, Snake, Diddy, (Toon) Link or Zero Suit Samus are not fun because they can produce items then... Peach has turnips (or even a rare chance of getting a Beam Sword/Bob-Omb/Mr. Saturn lol), Snake has grenades, (Toon) Link has bombs, Diddy has banana peels, and ZSS has her armor pieces. There's still skill involved here with having smart usage with items.

And yet playing against ZSS is one of my favorite Match-ups, mainly cause of armor pieces. :p

Go big or go home.

I feel that when players push themselves to the limits of the game (i.e. wave-shining, SHFFL-ing, or DACUS-ing) items become a weight that slows down the game and breaks down its natural flow.

That's just me I guess.

I also play a lot of PM, a mod designed in part to both make Brawl "faster" and to make every character pretty much balanced (there are however characters who stand on both ends and are a bit better or worse). I feel that items ruin this balance and fast pace and ultimately the game.

to be honest i found it pretty funny.

Oh, you two are so going to get it when the game comes out and we play with items. :)P)

And of course I didn't need the wall text. I just accidentally made a rant. I know you guys know me, and you know that sometimes I get in the mood, and I forget how much I've typed and next thing I know, I have a rant.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I was saying to those that said that items were no fun for anyone, well, it's not true. I love items, and others on here have said so too. I completely understand that people can play with raw strength.

And to be honest, the rant was mostly me over some people I've seen online that was not here, and kind of me just venting out how annoying they get with items vs. no items.

And I think Spring 2014 is too soon. I'm trying to piece everything together, and I'm afraid that we might not get as much as we hope. Like, we only have like 18 characters (9 on the premiere), and it's been 6 months. If it is released like in May or June, then that's 5 months that _ characters need to be revealed (of course, some surprises are fine with me, but I remember that the Dojo website had basically almost everything on it by the time the game came out (of course, the game was delayed via Sonic)).

I mean, if it's done, then I won't be upset or anything like that, I just...it's sooner than I expected. I thought for sure it was going to be a holiday pusher since I was thinking that it would potentially be out in November of this upcoming year.

bring on the delays I don't think they're going to show us unlockable characters this time around until maybe a month or less before it's released, or at least only a few of them. Maybe that contributes to the lack of character reveals.

Items or not I'm excited for this New Leaf stage.

Been playing New Leaf a lot lately, so this reveal was pretty timely. I wonder what the rest of the stage looks like.

Well, isn't it pretty obvious that people have different preferences? A wall of text isn't quite necessary to convey this. I hope I don't need to explain why people that play competitively and in tournaments don't like items, it sort of speaks for itself.

per this. BMB, you're overreacting.

What's this about a "Black-red Lightning"?

my thoughts on items vs no items
Dr. Javelin said:
...I personally consider [playing without items] more fun because I enjoy learning games. Learning them, getting better at them, mastering them - what's fun to me in games is honing a master technique and then getting to practice it out on your unwitting friends.

Random item drops totally destroy this for me because basically one side or the other can randomly get an advantage of an item. Even if you turn off "broken" items like Smash Balls, Starmans, etc. you still have a major problem when one side gets a Green Shell or something, lobs it for a KO. Totally upsets the balance of the game and makes it way less fun for me.

But I mean, if you enjoy randomness and it's more about messing around than skill, then that's perfectly fine. I just don't like to play that way personally.
To me it's more fun if you skillfully beat your opponent, not with the help of luck.

And don't give me that garbage about "oh it's about adapting to your circumstances". In no way is it balanced if a Starman appears on the opposite side of the stage and your opponent becomes invincible.

well you could always disable the massive bullshit items, like stars and dragoon parts

What happens when the Marioverse section of these forums brings itself into Smash Bros. discussions

Sakurai does have a franchise he created (And even one he revived). But this guy got the wrong one.

You wanna throw down?

Never mind that Mega Man has been a predominately Nintendo-centric series throughout most of its existence, he also predates Kirby by around 5 or so years. And "stealing" moves is kind of his M.O. Also, Sonic is only popular because of his rivalry with Mario. It surely isn't because (most of) his games are good.

Yeah that guy is an idiot. Even as a Sonic fan myself, I know Megaman has more relevant history with Nintendo then Sonic has. Sonic just got more precedence because alot of people wanted to see what started as a heated business rivalry. Into an actual fighting game. That's what a vast majority wanted to see as soon as the stars aligned for it to happen (3rd Parties becoming viable (Thank you Kojima/Solid Snake!) for Smash Bros, Sega being a Third Party for almost a decade, Sonic games being on Nintendo systems and even exclusives occasionally before then, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, etc.) and it did.

And I'm extremely happy for any Mega Man fans that Mega Man finally got his chance for Smash 4. And he can finally throw down with Mario and Sonic as a trio of Gaming Icons can battle at anytime.

i just hope megaman is actually good

he was shit in mvc1/2 and really bad in tvc.

I hope his moveset wont be good awful in this game.

I wonder how things'd have been different if TvC didn't give us Mega Man Volnutt.
