The main problem I have with this is

if it's a mario rpg I'd have to play it because I need to keep up with playing every installment in the series.

However this game just looks like it's got the type of gameplay I find extremely unappealing

It's like saying Super Paper Mario doesn't have a plot because its "plot" is awful.

Yes, it does have a plot. Peach is getting stolen. Bowser has magic orbs of a vague, unknown power. That's a plot.
