Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition announced for 3DS

I'll be honest, this looks nothing like the Mario RPGs I'm used to. Of course. The previous ones were action-adventure RPGs. This is a puzzle RPG.
Where are all the original characters? Don't think of this as a Mario RPG more so than a twist on the usual Mario formula. I don't think we're going to see many original characters; this game is about bringing characters from the franchise's history together.I haven't yet seen a single reference to a Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario game either. Just give it some time. We will never know what surprises are in the game until it comes out.
I may get it, but I'm not playing it like I play the RPGs. I'll probably classify it with the miscellaneous spinoffs. Good thoughts! Nothing to criticize at all.

Its almost as if its a large genre with many different ways it can executed.

Nah, not gonna dwell on it.

I can look forward to my super goomba squadron of death.

It doesn't need tacky original characters to be classified as an RPG, and it doesn't need to reference the other RPGs (see my big phat paragraph on why, you...)

I mean heaven forbid it actually resemble the thing its based off.

Thats not what I was referring to. I meant why is it such a big deal if it resembles NSMB and its basic level structure? When did a Mario spin off looking very similar to the thing its being spun off from suddenly become a negative trait?

Hell NSMB isn't even some kind of weird anomaly. A lot of its base character designs were specifically taken from previous games in the franchise. A primary example is NSMBDS which took a lot of its assets and character models from SM64DS. I am constantly baffled when people look at games and are like ''they are just milking the NSMB designs'' when most modern Mario character designs didn't even debut in NSMB to begin with!

I realize thats off topic but holy fuck is it ever something that bothers me.

I suppose it's because I've always liked the weird/different designs better. One of my favorite art styles is the one in Super Paper Mario. I also like the style of the Beanbean Kingdom in Superstar Saga. I just don't like how the design they're using as the "main" one happens to be kind of boring to me. Hell, I liked the world design in Super Mario 64 more than the one in the NSMB series. Call it nostalgia all you want, but I feel like Mario games are getting more and more unoriginal.

3D World had some creative levels but quite a few of them looked like NSMB too.

Thats what I'm talking about right there. This ''it looks like NSMB'' nonsense. NSMB isn't some specific kind of art style. NSMB is Mario. Its just the primary look of the franchise. Its had that look before NSMB even bloody existed.

Having the normal art style doesn't mean anything.

I didn't realize how many Mario fans act like Sonic fans (HIS EYES ARENT GREEN!).

No, the typical braindead Mario fans are...braindead in their own unique way: not playing any other games except Mario or Nintendo or whatever, or that any other game series can never be good as Mario much less better, so they have ignorance of what other games really are.

I'm quite the opposite when it comes to most Mario games. Whilst Sonic fans complain every time a design changes in the slightest, I really wish they would change a few designs and innovate a little. They used to mix things up a bit back in the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy days, but now every game is just your usual trek across grasslands, deserts, etc.

However as far as the RPGs are concerned, I have mixed feelings about change. Some changes are fine as long as they keep the things I like (such as Super Paper Mario: it changed the gameplay but kept the spirit of the series that I love) but I'd like them to follow the same general rules such as having a decent story but still twist things up each game to feel fresh.

Back in the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy days, there were nary a mainstream 2D Mario platformer aside from the remakes and, of course, New Super Mario Bros.

So? Why does everything have to be based on the 2D games? Most spinoffs are 3D.
Because 2D Mario platformers are what made Mario what he is today in the first place? Super Mario Bros. is arguably the most influential game in the Mario series, and New Super Mario Bros. is a successor to that. So I'd imagine there would be a lot of New Super Mario Bros. crap, even if it isn't as influential as Super Mario Bros. was.

Pretty sure most spin offs take elements from all types of platformers anyhow.

Most spin-offs are 3D? What do spin-offs being 3D have anything to do with this argument?

If I had one complaint its that the worlds thus far seem a bit small. Sure they'll take about as long if not longer due to the slower paced gameplay but I was kinda hoping for worlds with at least as many levels as your average Mario game.

But we've only seen the first few and even then not all of em within those worlds.
