General Discussion

Yeah

I'm getting the ESRB vibe from this article all over again.

Why delete two perfectly harmless articles? The Player's Choice category can't divide by system like the article (which is interesting), and if we make a Nintendo Selects category, it couldn't reflect that different regions have different games (which is also interesting). I suppose Nintendo Select could be merged with the Wii page, but Player's Choice, being multi-console can't go anywhere easily, and it's not coverage creep like ESRB in that the content we're including about them is still completely Mario relevant. The more info, the merrier, I say.

Per.

A bit ago, a user went and moved the titles of a lot of articles from capitals to lowercase, such as Chomp Keeper to Chomp keeper and Black Chest to Black chest. It basically made them not-titles. Considering none of the links have been updated yet, can I ask if this is something that we should stick with (personally, it looks really off), and/or something that should be enforced for other articles?

I find the inconsistency of these articles annoying, such as "Yoshi egg" and "Banana Bunch", with the previous article alternating between capital or normal in the same sentence.
A Banana Bunch is worth ten regular bananas, and Donkey Kong can sometimes find one by ground pounding in particular spots.
Personally I have no idea what to do.

IMO, titles should be capitalized. Like, lowercasing bit long sentence titles like "List of stuff in X" makes sense, but when it's just a name that happens to have two words instead of one, I'd rather see both words capitalized. It looks better, and it feels more natural (at least, to me it does) and if we just do that for all of them we don't have to worry about whether inconsistent dialogue and manuals and things also upper/lowercase words and then making our own poor wiki inconsistent to match.

...I've just noticed that the user I brought into question has been doing this since at least 2011. I don't suppose there's a handy admin tool for conveniently reverting a bunch of moves?

So it was the same person that moved "Yoshi Egg" to "Yoshi egg".

Why is Mini Mario (form) got the identifier on it? We have "Mini Mario (toy)", "Mini-Mario", "Mini Mario (form)", and "Mini Mario (disambiguation)", when really we only need the "(toy)" identifier since it only really shares it's name with one other article, and the Disambiguation is good for linking to the other two.

Yes, It is.

Not that I know of. Unless you guys don't have "revert" buttons when you look at logs and stuff too, in which case, I guess we do.

Anyway, since this keeps happening, maybe a proposal or at least a fuller consensus on how we decide on proper nouns should be held? Misty's always using "well the games and manuals don't capitalize the stuff" as his reasons for moving things, which is a valid argument, but as I've said before, I'm also a fan of the "screw it,. they're proper nouns, let's capitalize them all and be done with it" approach to trifling details like this.

Floaty Jump

Decided to revisit this article. What exactly is "floaty" jump? The definition isn't established here, so the article talks about parasols, Tanooki powers, Luigi's scuttle, the Mini Mushroom effects, and Cosmic Wario. The article lacks coherence as a result.

we have an article on this!?

In my opinion, I think it would be better to repurpose the article to talk specifically about Peach's special power from SMB2

Yeah, I guess so. Stuff like Tanooki powers, Cosmic Wario crap, Mini Mushroom effects, Scuttle, they all should go in their respective articles (scuttle already has one).

Is Floaty Jump even an official name?

Flutter Jump is a legitimate article so I say we scrap the Scuttle information in that article

The bosses are arranged by order of which they're fought rather than alphabetized like most of the template. I think it should be consistent. Also, if you're maintaining by that order, you should separate the Koopalings by order they are fought. Not sure about Mario & Luigi's special moves, though, but it looks good.

About the special moves, couldn't we just go back to having separate articles for them? A lot of the reason behind the merge was to minimize Smash Bros. coverage, and there was also talk of stubs being created (which used to be a very scary word). The stub argument is tosh for a bunch of reasons, but the coverage of "minor" Smash Bros aspects is an interesting point that I've always wanted to discuss. We have several characters like stage-specific ones (Ultimate Chimera, Bulborb, the Great Bay turtle) merged, which is because of their small appearances. At the same time, we have SSB enemies like Mites and Like Likes that also have relatively small appearances but are still given articles because they act as full-fledged enemies. In a similar vein, the special moves are constantly used and being seen, and the wiki's certainly no stranger to giving articles to special moves. After all, giving them articles would clear up some of the section's clutter.

I've prattled on about a subject that I want to discuss with no real point other than that I want to discuss it. What exactly is and isn't "minor" to the point of not covering it is something that I always wanted to discuss. Anyone else wanna make sense of what I wrote and chime in with their own thoughts?
That was the post I made on the proposal for splitting SSB sections from characters. Let's use that to get the ball rolling.

Yeah, always best to go with alphabetical order for everything except possibly short "protagonist/antagonist" -type lists where top-billing means something and ABC order isn't necessary to be able to find a given entry at a glance.

Another improvement might be to lose the battle/field distinction of Mario and Luigi's special moves in order to cut down on empty space caused by the extra rows. (I even wonder if it'd be possible to not givine by character and just use "(M)" and "(L)" (maybe even coloured) to distinguish who's move is which in one overall Special Attack section...) Also to improve space, I suggest merging the vague "Objects" and "Support" subheaders for the Items section and just have one "Other" row.
